Local Area DetailsKruger National Park
Part of the biggest nature reserve in the world - the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park of approximately 35 000 sq.km., Kruger National Park park runs for 350km along the Mozambique border and has an average width of 60km. It is also among the oldest national parks in the world - it turned 100 in 1998. Villa Nasibu is 30 km/30 minutes away from Phalaborwa Gate to Kruger NP.There are about 2000km of roads in the park, that allow you to explore its abundant wildlife. You can see the 'big five' here (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos) as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, all sorts of antelope species and smaller animals. You don't need a guide - you can drive in freely in your own car. What you see depends more on luck than on experience. You can drive same roads on and on and still see something new every time. Last April we missed by minutes the birth of a buffalo calf directly on a tar road of the park (on the photo the calf walkes away unsteadily following it's mum, it is still wet). But guided open-vehicle safaris, night safaris and walking safaris can also be organized, as well as overnight stays in camps within the Park, allowing you to visit bigger areas than within one day.
You can also see animals from a close distance in private breeding projects (cheetah, wild dog, white lions) in the area.
Drakensberg
Dragon Mountain is a basalt escarpment bordering the lowveld from the the west. On a clear day it can be seen from the terrace of the villa, although it is a good hour drive away. On a day-trip from Villa Nasibu you can take the Panorama Route, that leads through the rugged mountain range of the northern Drakensberg. Here, the inland plateau opens up fantastic views of the plains of the Lowveld a thousand metres below that can be enjoyed from the beauty spots like The Pinnacle, God's Window and Wonder View. The most spectacular stretch of the Route is the Blyde River Canyon. From many well-positioned vantage points one has a view of the gorge, one of South Africa's scenic wonders, which starts at Bourke's Luck Potholes and ends at the Three Rondavels. The Potholes at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur rivers are very impressive rock formations that were shaped millions of years ago by erosion. The bizarre swirl holes developed when the once rapid river carried masses of sand and debris. A network of pathways and footbridges allows visitors to explore the site. In the Bourke's Luck there is also the visitors' centre, which has numerous interesting displays and a 180 m circular trail leading to the lichens found in the area. The Three Rondavels on the other end of the gorge are unusually shaped huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the canyon. Further south, along the Route R532 from Graskop to Sabie, there is a series of picturesque waterfalls.
