Set among fields and wooded hillsides between the river Lot and the smaller river Célé in the Parc Naturel des Causses, 'Les Pégouriés' offers comfortable accommodation and a tranquil setting for holidays in what remains one of the most unspoilt and fascinating areas of France.
"Les Pégouriés” is situated up a short track off a minor road, undisturbed by immediate neighbours or traffic noise and surrounded by open fields, woods and hillsides. Originally an 18th century vigneron's house, it became a farm in the 19th century, later abandoned. We now live in the farmhouse, whilst the two large barns have been carefully converted and decorated to provide three self-catering gîtes with privacy, comfort and character.
ach of our gîtes faces a different direction and is completely self-contained. All three are carpeted throughout with sisal matting or tiled, with rugs, and are simply decorated and well furnished. Each bathroom has a loo, shower and washbasin. Kitchen areas are all well-equipped, and each has a full-size cooker and fridge. Each gîte has a grassed or paved area immediately outside together with barbecue and garden furniture for outdoor eating, and there are pleasant garden areas close by for your use.

Gite Three has been beautifully converted from the top storey of the smaller barn ­ with a solid floor added for insulation and privacy ­ this charming gîte has virtually all its original roof timbers intact. Velux windows make it very light and airy and give views of the surrounding countryside.
With one double bedroom, this gîte is ideal for couples, but with the
addition of a folding bed in the living area (free on request) will sleep
three in comfort.
A raised terrace and grassed area at the top of the sloping approach to the gîte, partially screened by trees, overlooks gardens and countryside and enjoys dawn to dusk sunshine.

Portable gas and electric heaters combined with excellent roof insulation
ensure year-round warmth.

There is a washing machine for the shared use of guests, as well as as clotheslines, iron and ironing board. There are also bikes, games including croquet, badminton and table-tennis and a wide range of books, maps and information freely available.

Local Area Details

There is something for everyone here _ beautiful countryside, abundant
wildlife, a wealth of history and rural tradition and, of course, excellent
food and wines. The whole area is captivating, and there are endless
opportunities for discovery and delight, both locally and further afield.
A 10-minute drive down the hill from 'Les Pégouriés' takes you to Cajarc, a
small town on the river Lot with a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, offering a
variety of local shops, restaurants and other facilities.
It has a good municipal swimming pool _ including a toddlers' pool - and a
pretty waterfront for strolling, dining, or taking boat trips up the river.
Figeac, less than half an hour's drive away, is an old and interesting
market town, with medieval streets and squares and many well-restored
buildings, but is not thronged with tourists. It has a good hypermarket
nearby, as does the town of Villefranche de Rouergue. A little further than
Figeac, Villefranche has perhaps the best of all the local markets every
Thursday morning.
You will find plenty to do and see here. 'Les Pégouriés' is an ideal base
from which to explore the Lot and Célé valleys, where the rivers cut deep
into the limestone, creating beautiful and dramatic scenery. Villages cling
to the cliffs, and traditional farms still flourish, with their fields of
tobacco, maize and sunflowers.
The history and way of life of former generations are evident in all you
see, from the cave paintings of Peche Merle, the nearby picturesque village
of St Cirq-la-Popie, the chateaux and the ancient places of worship, to the
simple hamlets and villages, the rolling cultivated land and the wild
landscapes beyond.
Although visitors to the area are becoming more numerous, mainly in July
and August, the mass tourism of the Dordogne does not penetrate here, and
commercialisation is fairly minimal. Basic facilities are however readily
available and the local people are friendly, welcoming and helpful. There
is a good network of information centres for visitors and throughout the
summer there are plenty of local events, including village celebrations and
concerts for you to enjoy.
Outdoor interests are well catered for. There is excellent walking, varying
from Grandes Randonées forming part of the ancient pilgrim route to
Santiago de Compostela, to smaller tracks and footpaths. Numerous paths
pass through open countryside dotted with ancient farms and small hamlets,
beside rivers and across the rugged terrain of the limestone causses,
almost all well marked and accessible.
Cycling offers another way to explore. The roads are free of heavy traffic
and many of the tracks are fine for mountain bikes _ we have two bikes
available for the free use of guests, and others can be hired inexpensively
in Cajarc.
You can also hire canoes and kayaks on both the Célé and the Lot and there
is horse riding at various nearby centres.
There are four good swimming pools within 10 -15 minutes drive of 'Les
Pégouriés' and plenty of picnic and swimming places by the rivers.
Wildlife abounds here, and lovers of birds, butterflies, flowers and
animals will find much of interest. Orchids appear in profusion in late
Spring and early summer and a variety of birds, both resident and migrant,
can be seen, according to the season. Bird and orchid lists are available
on request.

Many of the nicest things to see and do are to be found locally, but if you
want to explore further afield there are plenty of interesting places
within reach. Here are just a few: CAHORS Vineyards famed for deep red
wines, an impressive 14th century fortified bridge, an interesting old
quarter around the cathedral. Enjoy the wonderful drive along the Lot
Valley.
PECH MERLE, near Cabrerets. Marvellous caves with prehistoric cave
paintings still on view. Tour and museum.
ROCAMADOUR Dramatically poised on a cliff face, its famous 'Black Virgin'
made it a major site for medieval pilgrims. Today, it remains stunning, if
commercialised.
PADIRAC One of the Lot's many geological wonders. A gouffre formed by the
collapsed roof of a lofty subterranean cavern. Tour and boat rides on
underground river through huge and beautiful caves.
CUZALS Fascinating open air museum of rural life through the centuries in
the Lot.
GRAMAT Extensive and enjoyable animal park with many native and rare
species.
CONQUES Romanesque church with medieval treasures and superb 12th century
tympanum.
ALBI Extraordinary cathedral. Toulouse Lautrec museum with huge collection
of paintings and drawings.
CORDES Historic and pretty hilltop town with spectacular views.
AVEYRON GORGES Dramatic countryside, with many places of interest, such as
Najac, St Antonin-Noble-Val and Penne.
