Grasse (32 km)
Grasse has been since the 18th century a significant center of perfumery.It is also a health resort and a tourist attraction. Places to visit : The cathedral dating from the 10th and the 11th century, was altered in the 17th. It shelters three remarkable oil paintings of Pierre Paul Rubens, a tryptique attributed to Louis Br顬 the "Lavement des pieds" of Jean-Honore Fragonard. The bishop's house shelters today the town hall and has a tower of the 12th century. The Fragonard villa-museum, house of the 17th century where Fragonard has lived. The international museum of Perfumery recalls the history of this art. History : Founded by the Romans, Grasse was at the 12th century a small Republic on the model of the Italian cities with which it maintained the trade. In 1226, the city was integrated into the Provence county. Fragonard was born in Grasse in 1732 and took refuge there during the French Revolution. The health resort had the favours of the princess Pauline Bonaparte and the Queen of England.
Gorges du Verdon (37 km)
The Verdon (200 km long) is an affluent of the Durance. The Gorges are a splendid canyon resulting from erosion by the river of the rocks limestones. They were popularized at the beginning of the 20th century and since then they attract amateurs of pedestrian and equestrian excursions, of water sports (rafting, hydrospeed, canoe-kayak, canyoning...), of air sports... The villages bordering the Gorges have kept their stunning original Provencal charm.
Saint Tropez (42 km)
Saint-Tropez is the most well known sea town on the French Riviera. It welcomes every year not only a clientele composed of celebrities and movie stars, but also crowds of tourists attracted by the fame of the city. The museum of the Annonciade of Saint-Tropez shelters a beautiful collection of works of art notably of Bonnard, Rouault or Derain; the citadel, constructed between the 16th and the 18th century, today houses the Maritime museum. Originaly Saint-Tropez was a Greek commercial/trading center,it took its present name from a Roman soldier "Torp賢,he became Christian martyr in the 1st century after J.C. Until the 19th century, Saint-Tropez remained a small fishing village. It is Maupassant that discovered the charm of Saint-Tropez and contributed to opening it up to tourism. Aix en Provence (60 km)
Aix-en-Provence possesses former hotels and fountains harmoniously situated around the Mirabeau course and the Saint-Savior cathedral, style "Romantic", rebuilt during the 13th>15th centuries, and sheltering the triptych of the ardent Bush by Nicolas Froment. Its other most remarkable buildings are the former palaces of the archdiocese (17th century, become the museum of the Tapestries), the Sextiuses thermal baths, and the churches of Saint-Jean-Of-Malta (13th century) and Saint Marie-Madeleine (17th - 18th centuries). Its famous university was founded in 1409 by Louis II of Anjou. History: In 123 before J.C, a Roman colony, baptized Aquae Sextiae according to its founder's name consul Caﵳ Sextius Calvinus and because of the presence of thermal sources, got created on the site of the present city, Aix was connected in France in 1501, when Louis XII establishes the parliament of Provence there.
