Villa in Madeira, Portugal

Property Details of Madeira Villa

Casa Belflores is a private villa that offers you the opportunity to live, albeit for only a short while, like a local Funchal resident.
This charming, traditional Madeirense house was built in the early 1900s and stands in a wonderful position, tucked away on the hillside, with superb views of the bay of Funchal and a lovely patio, surrounded by exotic flowers, creepers and shrubs with orange, lemon, avocado pear and banana trees in the garden.

Since early 2004 guests enjoy a new swimming pool with pool furniture and great views over Funchal bay.

The house has been carefully restored to retain many original features, such as the timbered ceilings and quaint interior window shutters. Yet at the same time, modernisation means that the kitchen is complete with a microwave, an eye-level electric oven and a washing machine. Downstairs there is a cloakroom with a shower cubicle and WC, and the living room with cable TV and direct dial telephone, as well as the dining room are are comfortably furnished with good quality furniture and fabrics that are in keeping with the character of the house.  Should you encounter an occasional chilly evening, early or late season, then a glorious open log fire, together with a warming glass of the island's famous wine, will soon revive you!
Upstairs, two bedrooms, a double and a twin, share a full modern bathroom and there is a dressing room with a single bed and a sofa bed for one person, which can be used as an additional bedroom. On this level a door leads out to a sunny balcony with table and chairs and a couple of sun loungers - the perfect spot to relax, unwind and perhaps have a quiet read.

Just outside, you are only a few minutes walk from the local taxi rank, a small local shop selling essentials, a chemist and a restaurant or two. Funchal is a steep thirty-minute, downhill walk (1.5 Km), unless you want to catch the local bus, which stops just 50 metres away. A more colourful alternative is to take the wickerwork toboggan from just around the corner for a breathtaking ride that completes the lower part of the toboggan journey, which starts in Monte, high above.

A twice weekly cleaning service is provided.

Please book early, the house is quite in demand!

Local Area Details

Come and sample this feast of breathtaking sheer cliffs overlooking the sea.

Let yourself succumb to the charms of Madeira. It is not difficult. First, there's the island's exceptional climate, with its mild temperatures all year round (between 16?C and 25?C) and its exuberant natural features and tropical vegetation, in which flowers and fruit have been turned into a genuine cult. Then there's its rich historical heritage and luxury hotels - attractions enough to satisfy even the most demanding of tourists.

First discovered by the Portuguese navigator Jo㯠Gon硬ves Zarco, this beautiful island, 700 km from Casablanca and 900 km from Lisbon, soon became a major port of call for the caravels ploughing the waves on their way to the distant lands of the Far East.

Come and sample this feast of breathtaking beauty: sheer cliffs overlooking the sea, natural swimming-pools carved out of the rocks, high mountains swathed in mist, narrow footpaths running alongside the ?levadas? or irrigation channels, offering the visitor the possibility of countryside walks in the midst of the most extraordinary landscape.

As soon as you arrive in Funchal, the island's capital, you will probably find yourself bumping into all kinds of famous people, for this is traditionally one of their favourite spots for a relaxing holiday. Overlooking a wide and sheltered bay, the city successfully blends together its special vocation as a tourist resort and its ability to provide all kinds of cultural events that testify to its history, amongst which one of the special highlights is its colourful festivals.
You will also certainly enjoy the traditional embroidery and basketwork, revealing the great talent and skilled hands of the island's inhabitants, who have produced some truly genuine works of art. Not forgetting the famous fortified ?Madeira? wine, which for more than four hundred years has spread the name and flavour of the island all round the world.
It is well worth taking the time to extend your visit a little further to the north east so that you can discover the island of Porto Santo, roughly 40 km away. Although this is much flatter than its ?mother-island?, there is a wonderfully extensive beach waiting for you here, with sands that are famous for their great therapeutic properties. At Vila Baleira, the island's picturesque capital, you must make sure to visit the house where Christopher Columbus once lived.
