Local Area DetailsMany visitors who come to the Marche are looking for a taste of the "real" Italy, unsullied by mass tourism, yet welcoming to foreigners - if that's what you want, you won't be disappointed.
Whether you want to admire masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, enjoy the warmth of sunny beaches, foor hunt out the best of the catch in a Mediterranean fishing port, or just indulge in the more elementary pleasures of enjoying good food and wine, the location of "Mamma Gina's" Bed & Breakfast allows you to experience all of this:
The well-known beach of San Benedetto del Tronto is very close to the Bed & Breakfast (only 15 minutes by car/scooter). This is an ideal beach for the everyday sun. Worth visiting is the close Sirolo on the Conero peninsula, one of the prettiest seaside reasorts. The b&b also has its own pool so you can relax and enjoy the water with no need to use the car.
Here is a rundown of the largest towns in the region - click on the names to get a full "guidebook" entry for the place. Of the region's five principal towns, Urbino is our favourite. This jewel of a renaissance city remains little changed from the days when Duke Federico of Montefeltro set up his celebrated court here in the second half of the 15thC.
The provincial capital of Ascoli Piceno lies at the southern end of the Marche. This beguiling old town is well worth an overnight stay. Its marble-paved main square is reckoned one of the most beautiful in Italy. The last of the region's main centres is Macerata, a dignified town, famous for its annual outdoor opera festival. Smaller inland towns that are well worth visiting, you will get to know more about them once you are at our place...
In the b&b: pool, bools, bycicle, beach tennis.
Very close to the Bed & Breakfast there is a moto-cross centre. Nice biking traks can be found just going out of the house among the surrounding hills. For those who like flying there is the possibility of flying ultra-lights in San Benedetto.
The marchigiani eat more meat than any other Italians and it shows. In many country areas going out to a restaurant is basically an excuse to fuel up on enormous platters of charcoal-grilled meats - grigliata mista di carne. Being Acquaviva Picena along the Adriatic coast you can also enjoy some of the peninsula's best fish. And all this at extremely convinient prices!
Cooking in the Marche is deeply rooted in peasant tradition and remains impervious to the arrival of frozen bastoncini di pesce (fish fingers). Here the home cook rather than the professional chef rules and even the smartest restaurants seek to produce food just like nonna, or grandmother, used to make. The use of fresh, top quality materials assembled with the minimum of fuss marks marchigiano food. But as dishes are strictly based on tradition and local produce, each local area has its distinctive cucina tipica.
The old labels ristorante, trattoria and osteria have become somewhat interchangeable in recent years; many of the smarter, and most expensive places, call themselves osterie and take pride in reinterpreting strictly local dishes with great flair.
Avoid the temptation just to order dishes whose names are familiar to you from back home - you will frequently be missing the best the house has to offer. If you are touring in summer or early autumn, look out for posters advertising the local sagra - a festival dedicated to a town's particular speciality where you can try the food in question in every guise imaginable. We've listed a few of the more curious sagre for you.
