Les Vignes Lodge in beautiful gardens in South of France

...

Lodge in Languedoc, France

Property Details

The lodge is located in our very large garden on a lane nestling in the middle of the vineyards and the views are of the small village of Neffies, the hills and the vines. It is very peaceful and private with just the sound of the nightingales for company. Neffies is a small village just 11 kilometers from Pezenas, 60 kilometers from Montpellier. Situated in the countryside, the nearest beach is just 20 minutes away. There is a good marked walk right outside our gate.

The lodge is just a few steps from the large fenced pool area and is adjacent to a boulle court, patio area with sunbeds and barbecue. There is also a large covered terrace with table and chairs. The lodge has patio doors which lead to an open plan, cathedral ceiling sitting/dining room. The kitchen is open plan from the dining area and is a country style, white, fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher. The front door leads to the covered terrace with steps down to the patio and barbecue.

The shower room is fully tiled and has an enclosed shower, toilet and wash basin unit. The washing machine is also in this room. The front bedroom has a double bed and the rear bedroom has two single beds. The third bedroom is reached via wooden steps which lead up from the sitting room to a large mezzanine area with two single beds, this is ideal for children as the ceiling has a maximum height of approx five feet (1.5m).

Local Area Details

About our region

This area of France has been inhabited for thousands of years and for most if not all of that time the cultivation of the grape has been the main source of income. The terrain is rugged with many limestone outcrops and olive trees as well as hundreds of vineyards. Buzzards, kestrels, kites, hoopoes and bee-eaters can be seen flying over head and the scenery has a wild and natural beauty about it.

The villages hereabouts were built of the original stone and the narrow streets radiate in a circular fashion with the church at the centre of the circle. They are very ancient and architecturally fascinating.

Towards the Mediterranean the scenery changes as the land becomes sandier, the marsh areas fill with different types of birds including heron and flamingos. There are long sandy seaside beaches and small harbours on the lagoon, canals and river.

Seaside restaurants offer a wide range of seafoods as well as fresh oysters and mussels from the lagoon. Inland, restaurants specialise in Provencal type foods such as sweet peppers, barbecued meats, unusual salads & courgettes. There is a strong Spanish influence in the area so Paella is also very popular.

NEFFIES, CAUX & ROUJON

3 small, quaint, picturesque and ancient villages which all owe their current existence to the cultivation of the grape for wine production. There are hundreds of wine caves and co-operatives in the Herault region. In fact, it is the principle producer of ?vin ordinaire? in France. Although, they have been working very hard to improve the quality of their vines for some time and now produce some very sought after wines.

There are several wineries within the immediate vicinity, the closest is at the end of the lane and there is another opposite it and another next door! So there is never any reason to go short of a bottle or two at any time of day.

If you are a cyclist you may like to cycle in to Roujon, Caux or just Neffies. It is very enjoyable cycling along empty lanes with just the birds for company and beautiful scenery and sunshine all around you. Our lane is particularly deserted (unless, that is, it is the grape harvesting season).

Caux, Roujan and Neffies all have XII/XIII century churches as well as elaborate and ornate cemeteries.

The closest post office is next to the square in Neffies, although, the opening hours are limited. There is a larger post office in Roujon with longer hours. There is a good restaurant, a small boulangerie, a well stocked grocers? and a Tabac in Neffies. There are several shops, restaurants, bars, boulangeries and tabacs in Roujon.

PEZENAS

This little town is only about 11 kms from here. It was once called Piscenae and it prides itself on its past which is reflected in its interesting little streets and its unchanged mansions. Moliere, the famous 17c actor and playwright lived and gave performances there. The present inhabitants celebrate this fact during the summer season and the ?Mirondela dels Arts?. This is when local crafts are displayed and folk festivals, theatre performances and concerts take place.

There are numerous ancient and interesting buildings in the town with elegant balconies and ornate doorways and workshops. Craftsmen and artists mainly, now occupy these. There are lots of antique shops to brouse around and Pezenas holds several antique markets throughout the year.

There is a very good food and general market here every Saturday that sells excellent fresh fish, cheese, fruit, vegetables, charcuterie and olives as well as the usual market hardware.

Pezenas is also the location of the nearest, good, hypermarket. It is HyperChampion and it can be found on the main route out of town. There are several other good food shops here as well as numerous bars, cafes and restaurants.
