Local Area Details

Situated on the east coast, Aghia Marina is a lively seaside village and the most popular tourist destination on the island. On the road to Aghia Marina, you pass through one of the most fertile areas of Aegina. Virtually all of the local crops are grown here, and it is home to many of the local potteries. It is rumoured, that Aristophanes either lived or owned land here.
Named after the small church of St. Marina at one end of the sheltered bay, Aghia Marina is only 25 minutes from Aegina Town by bus. The wide sandy beach sweeps in a crescent, and shelves gently into the clear water, making it very safe for swimming. You can rent sun beds, parasols and pedaloes, and the beach is fringed by an array of cafes and tavernas. At each end of the beach, rocky coves provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling. It also has the advantage of the surrounding forests which protect it from the Northerly winds.
There are many shops, including those selling the locally made pottery, Greek art, leather goods, clothes and traditional gold and silver jewellery. Numerous bars and tavernas are mainly situated along the bustling main street and the harbour front. The tavernas are renowned for their range of fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, together with restaurants serving European cuisine. If you venture a little way out of Aghia Marina to the small village of Alones, there are a few excellent traditional tavernas serving very good Greek food. The bars follow the old tradition of waiting ?til the last guests retire before closing, and there are three night-clubs positioned at the edge of the village for those who want to carry on ?til dawn. Aghia Marina is a great choice for both young and young at heart, couples and families, and is also suitable for single travellers, who will soon find themselves amongst friends.
Whilst in Aghia Marina, it is well worth visiting the temple of Aphaia, about 3km away. Built in loca l stone, this Doric style temple is the best preserved of all the islands and has been described as "the most perfectly developed of the late archaic temples in Greece".
Situated on the hill above Aghia Marina, you can enjoy stunning views of the Aegean and it has been said that if a line were drawn between the temple of Aphaia, the Acropolis and the temple at Cape Sounion, it would reveal a perfect equilateral triangle!
Another fantastic place to visit is the stunning church of Aghios Nektarios, on the road from Aghia Marina to Aegina Town. This beautiful, Byzantine style church rises majestically from the gentle hills of the central valley and is full of decorative paintings, frescoes and mosaics. Also here is the original monastery built by St Nektarios himself and the visitor gets a wonderful view of the remains of the Byzantine capital of the island, Paleochora. Of the 365 churches that once stood there, about 32 now remain, clinging to the hillside. A ten minute walk into the hills behind Aghios Nektarios will allow you to explore these tiny churches, many still with their original frescoes, and take in the incredible atmosphere of a bygone age, with a fantastic view for free!
