The Hotel occupies a premier position by Paignton sea front situated on level ground with its own car parking front and rear, just a few yards from the delightful harbour and beach, with splendid views across Torbay towards Torquay and a short level walk from the town centre, railway station and entertainment areas.
All rooms are en-suite with colour TV?s, alarm clocks, tea/coffee making facilities and hairdryers. The hotel has a licensed bar and lounge for the guests comfort. We also have available for our guests use a beach hut that is situated at the Roundham end of Goodrington beach.

Local Area DetailsPaignton is where we find Oldway Mansion, which was originally built, for Singer family (of sewing machine fame), but it now houses the Torbay council offices. Parts of house can be visited and you can wander around its beautiful gardens at your leisure. On the Brixham side of Paignton you come to Clennon Valley leisure Centre which has a swimming pool and other leisure facilities, also close by is Quaywest UK's only outdoor water park when you can ride on thrilling water slides and drive Go Karts among other attractions. Don't forget a visit to Paignton Zoo (recently featured on BBC television " The Zoo Keepers"). Paignton Harbour is just a few yards from the hotel were you can catch a ferry to Torquay, Brixham, Dartmouth, or hire a boat to go fishing for the day. A short walk down the Esplanade you will find The new multiplex cinema just across from Paignton Pier
Within a few minutes walk from the hotel you can catch a Steam Train to Kingswear, where a short ferry ride will take you to the picturesque town of Dartmouth.
In Babbacombe just the other side of Torquay you will find Babbacombe Model Village a photographic paradise who now have a all-weather facility, with a find Wally prize quiz for the kids, an Agatha Christie quiz trial. Also nearby is Bygones, wander back in time to a bygone age, featuring over 20 shops and period rooms, at 28-ton steam engine and a World War I trench.
On Babbacombe Downs you can get the Cliff Railway down to Oddicombe Beach, or stroll along the downs with its stunning views over Lyme Bay to the far end were you will find Babbacombe Theatre which is putting on "THE HOOKED ON LAUGHTER" variety show, also close at hand to the hotel is the precinct of St.Marychurch with its delightful local shops. As you head down to Torquay you will find Kents Caverns which has been awarded Britain's "Cave of the year 2000" were you can explore a cavern which was used by pre-historic man.
In Torquay itself you can stroll along the promenade with its views over Torbay, visit the shops, Riviera Centre with its fun pool and flume, fitness centre and café. Visit Torre Abbey to see the Agatha Christie Collection (Dame Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890), Abbey ruins, Palm House and Gardens. Walk along the Rock Walk (best seen at night when the lights are on). Just on the Paignton side of Torquay is the quaint village of Cockington with its thatched cottage, Old Forge and shops. In the grounds of Cockington Manor you will find a Norman Church, see the wild fowl on the lakes, there is also a lovely woodland walk for the more energetic visitor.
If we go in the other direction from Paignton we come to Brixham, the quaint fishing town where the harbour almost into the centre of the town. It boasts one of the largest fishing fleet in the UK, it also has a traffic free shopping area where you can browse around the local shops. Another of Brixhams claims to fame is that William of Orange landed there on his way to claim the English throne. Close by is the nature reserve of Berry Head, well you can wander around the Napoleonic Fort, see the shortest and highest lighthouse in England and visit the Berry Head Centre where you can see the seabirds nesting on the cliff via closed-circuit television.
If we travel a bit further from Paignton we come to the village of Shaldon which is situated beside the river Teign which holds a craft market once a week during the season, while in Shaldon why not visit Shaldon Wildlife Trust with its monkeys owls and talking parrots among its attractions. Just across the river, you can catch a ferry if you want, we come to Teignmouth, which is a delightful seaside town, with its long promanade, and pier to stroll along. If we carry on a long coastal road which roughly follows the railway line which was originally built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel we come to Dawlish which is famous for its Black Swan's that live on a Brook which runs through the centre of the town. Carrying on further along the road we come to Dawlish Warren with its large sandy beach and amusement area. On walking along the beach we come to the bird sanctuary. If we continue along the coastal road we come to Starcross where we can park the car and catch a ferry to Exmouth. If you carry on towards Exeter a little further up the road you will come to Powderham Castle, were you can visit the grounds or visit the house, they have recently introduced a Farm Shop were you can by local produce. Sir Philip Courtenay started the building which over looks the River Exe in 1390, and his decendents have lived there ever since.
There are many more attractions within a short car ride of Paignton. They include Canonteign falls, England's highest waterfall. Bicton Park botanical gardens enjoy over 60 acres of beautiful gardens with its soft sweeping lawns, and in water features, fragrant English borders and formal gardens among its many attractions. Or you can head up to Dartmoor you can visit Becky Falls to see the waterfalls or take a woodland walk. You can also visit Dartmoor's miniature pony and animal farm which is just two miles west of Mortonhampstead, also while on the moor don't forget to visit Princetown the location of Dartmoor Prison. There is a very interesting visitors centre which has a excellent folk law display.
A trip to Plymouth is a must to visit the Barbican, here you will find the National Marine Aquarium, the Mayflower Steps from where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620, you can also visit the Elizabethan House ( a Tudor Sea Captains timber framed house ), and possibly a visit to the Plymouth Gin Distillery. Wander on Plymouth Hoe to see were Drake played bowls while he waited for the Armada, also on the Hoe is Smeatons Tower, a old lighthouse which when it had finished its useful service on the Eddystone Rock was rebuilt on the hoe. A visit to the Plymouth Dome which is situated on the seaward side of the Hoe with its audiovisual displays as well as the static exhibits will bring 400 years of Plymouth's history to life is also worth while.
A trip to Dartmouth could well be worthwhile either by catching a Ferry from Torquay, a Paignton & Dartmouth Stream Railway train from Paignton Station or driving there in your car. A trip on the river Dart to Totnes, (it has been called the alternative capital of England), with its castle and clock tower on a bridge over the main street (now fully restored after a fire some years ago). You can drive further into the South Hams to Blackpool Sands, Slapton Sands (where the American forces practiced for the D.Day landings) and Tor Cross, where there is a monument in the car park in the form of a Sherman Tank. Here are many more things to do in the area like Buckfastleigh Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary, Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Pennywell Farm, Buckland Abbey the home of Sir Francis Drake, Bowden House Ghostly Tales and Photographic Bygones, Buckfast Abbey, a Magnificent Abbey Church, the home of Buckfast Tonic Wine, with its herb gardens, shops, restraurent, and exibition, Tuckers Maltings, England's only working Malthouse open to the public, Morwellham Quay and take a ride into the West Countries most Spectacular historic mine. These are just some of the things to do when you stay at the Briars Hotel.
