Local Area Details

Lubrin village is a small village of about 500 of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet. The village is very Spanish and to occasionally hear another spoken language is quite a shock! There are a number of cafe/bars that offer tapas at the bar and also Restaurant Los Molinos which was recently voted the No. 1 tapas in the Province of Almeria. The village shops (which include 2 supermarkets, 3 bakeries and 3 butchers!) are stocked with all the basic needs and the Wednesday Market provides an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. On most days the fresh fish van comes up from the coast. Lubrin is a time warp which will remind us more senior citizens of an early childhood in our own village or town where family groups sit out in the street on hot summer nights and children play until the evening sun sets over the hill.

The main 'activities' for the visitor would be walking, touring, reading, relaxing and perhaps partaking of a drop of two of vino! The apartments are ideally suited to two couples who will be able to enjoy each others company yet be able to have their own space.
Places of interest include Sorbas for its caves and pottery, Cuevas de Almanzora for its 'cave houses' and Tabernas for its magnificent Desert National Park. Granada and the Sierra Nevada are just 2 hours away and the skiing season adds another dimension to life in Lubrin.

About History
Lubrin’s roots have been traced back some 3.5million years ago when the man leaves Africa and arrives in the Almanzora Valley. About 100,000 years ago Neanderthal man arrives in Lubrin as evidenced by flint tools found in The Cave of Bats just off the road to El Marchael and rock paintings and carvings on the Stones of Wax in El Campico. It is believed that Homo Sapien arrived about 25,000 years ago. The 8th Century saw the Moors invade Southern Spain and ruled until the late 16th century. The original castle (where now the clock tower stands) dates back to 1309. The last Muslim Land Registry is dated 1488 and in 1571 the Moors were expelled and Southern Spain came under the control of the Catholic Kings. In 1587 Lubrin was settled by the Marqués del Carpio and later by the Duques de Berwik y Alba with families originating from other provinces. The main agricultural crops were cereal and olives and there were three almanzaras (olive presses) and six molinos (flour mills).
