Local Area DetailsEast Neuk of Fife
The East Neuk or eastern 'corner' of Fife is the name generally given to that part of the Fife coast lying between St Andrews and Lundin Links. Claiming some of the most fertile farmland in Fife it includes attractive picture-postcard fishing villages and former ports such as Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans, Elie and Earlsferry, and Upper and Lower Largo. In medieval times much of Scotland's sea trade with France, the Low Countries and Scandinavia was conducted through the ports of the East Neuk and in later years many of these coastal villages were home to large fishing fleets.
Fife was described in medieval times as 'a beggar's mantle fringed with gold'. The quaint coastal villages of the East Neuk form a unique chain of holiday and fishing locations, with their warm stone architecture featuring crow-step gables and red pantiles, steep cobbled streets and south-facing beaches. The area boasts a wide variety of activities and interests within easy driving distance, an extensive range of outdoor sports including abseiling and wind surfing, and being only twenty minutes from St. Andrews, seat of Scotland's oldest University and the home of golf, Elie and Earlsferry provides the ideal base from which to tour and enjoy this fantastic area.
Activities in and around Elie and Earlsferry:
Golf course and another nine hole course, putting green, tennis courts, bowling green, water sports centre and sailing club, fishing, horse riding, beautiful ?Blue Flag? beaches, coastal walks. Excellent restaurants and pubs.
The East Neuk is probably the most scenic part of Fife with visitors and holidaymakers looking to experience the unique bygone atmosphere of its many fishing villages. It is also the central point of the popular 'Fife Coastal Path' that stretches between the Forth and Tay road bridges.
There are many places to go and things to do in and around the East Neuk and something to suit everyone. Nearby attractions include:
Anstruther - the Scottish Fisheries Museum, boat trips to May Island, Scotland's Secret Bunker.
St Andrews - the Byre Theatre, Sea Life Centre, Botanic Gardens, Golf Museum, Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Craigtoun Park by St Andrews is a great adventure playground for children, with a boating pond and miniature train and lots of space to run around.
