The area is famous for charter and sport fishing, and hosts the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the largest on the east coast of the United States. It is also famous for diving, again one of the top spots in the Atlantic Ocean. Blackbeard, the pirate, sank his boat, The Queen Anne Revenge, only a mile or so off shore from Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon in the 1700's and relics from the ship are on display at the Maritime Museum in Beaufort. There are many golf courses open to the public in the area. Also seafood restarants and botiques and specialty shops abound everywhere. New Bern , NC is only 30 miles away, and is an early colonial town founded in the 1700's and the first colonial capital of NC and the Tryon Palace and grounds are comparable to Williamsburg, Va.restoration.
