Former Bakehouse in the Beautiful Vezere Valley France
Cottage in Dordogne, France
Property Details of Dordogne Cottage
La Petite Maison is a detached stone cottage with the remains of the old bread oven still in the kitchen and now a comfortable open plan studio ideal for 2 persons (but could accommodate up to 4). It is centrally located to explore the wonders of the Perigord Noir.
The cottage is in the open countryside surrounded by farmland and woodland with a few houses nearby. The nearest village Le Moustier is a short walk away and has a boulangerie, a hotel, a restaurant and bar and a church.
The Vezere Valley is the highlight of the Perigord Noir, which in turn is recognised as the most beautiful part of the Dordogne region, with wonderful scenery, both natural and architectural. The cottage is located approximately midway between Les Eyzies and Montignac on the road which runs up this valley. The valley is famous as the Vallee de l'Homme with its wealth of pre-historic sites and cave paintings. There are so many places to visit and things to do within a 30km radius but for those lazy days you can just walk out of the cottage, up into the woods or down along the river bank or take a canoe on the river.
With pre-historic cave paintings, medieval towns and sites, chateaux, sublime river views, magnificent panoramas, crystal caves, canoeing, festivals and markets there is no shortage of things to do and see in this area.
The accommodation consists of an open plan studio design comprising
Fitted kitchen with electric cooker, fridge/freezer. washing machine and microwave;
Living area with dining table and chairs, a futon (which opens at night to provide a second double bed) satellite TV (English TV and radio channels);
Mezzanine with double bed;
Enclosed outside area safe for children or pets with garden furniture.
Shower room with W.C. basin and shower
Please note that while the cottage is equipped for 4 persons it is better suited to a 2 person occupancy due to its size and studio layout
Local Area DetailsActivities:
The area abounds in pre-historic sites - too many to list. The famous Lascaux 11 cave paintings are a must
Must-see towns are Sarlat (a well preserved, extremely attractive medieval town with a huge market on Saturdays, festivals, theatre in mid July and beer early August); Domme ( another well preserved, terribly pretty bastide with panoramic view)
La Roque St Christophe, just a short walk away, is a fascinating rock shelter a km long which in the middle ages housed over 1000 people
St Leon, one of the "plus beaux villages de France" is just a few km away. Canoeing is available here and there is a festival late July to late August and Baroque and classical music concerts.
Chateau de Losse a few km away, is the nearest chateau. It is said there is a chateau for every day of the year in Perigord and this may be right!
La Roque-Gageac and Beynac on the bank of the Dordogne are fabulous villages built into the rock face. River cruises can be taken from La Roque-Gageac.
Cycle hire, tennis, horse riding, golf, swimming lake.
Eating and drinking - specialities of the region are duck and goose products, especially foie gras, walnut products- walnut liqueur, walnut oil, gateau de noix; wines of Bergerac - Montbazillac, Pecharment and Cabecou goats' cheese.
