Villa in Madeira, Portugal

Property Details of Madeira Villa

Casa do Lugarinho is located in a remote, plush, green and unspoilt area of Prazeres in Calheta. It is a cosy refurbished cottage fitted out with all the modern amenities expected in a holiday home (except perhaps for the intentional absence of a television) and is situated at the end of a wobbly winding country lane with only some bucolic pastures, an inviting swimming pool and cultivated small lots of tenant farming separating it from the wide blue Atlantic ocean yonder.  The views are, in a word, breathtaking. The evening sunsets are photographers dream and the days are quiet, lazy, uncomplicated and very, very, far away from that madding crowd...

Several restaurants and shopping spots are five minutes away by car. Supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, and other amenities are about ten minutes away by car. It is recommended, indeed, required to rent a car so as not to depend on taxis or busses that are further removed from the property than would be comfortable to walk up to.
The cottage is a picture of how pretty a formerly old and abandoned cottage can look like after being carefully restored and refurbished. It is a well renovated structure comprising two floors in the older part of the house. In the new attachment a further extra bedroom and toilet facilities has been installed.
There is a family size barbecue in the small amphitheatre style atrium between the house and the swimming pool. The outside living area is located on a wooden deck and has its own garden chairs and parasols. There is ample garden space with awesome sea views that nestle next to cultivated lots of land. The charm of the area is its simple quiet natural feel about it. There is plenty of walking to do along trails and levadas making a stay of at least two weeks necessary to explore the many different routes and beauty spots to be discovered in the area.

Activities such as sailing, fishing, walking, surfing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding are all available in the Calheta area. In some of the larger hotels special activities can be enjoyed such as thallassotherapy, water massage, saunas, tennis, squash, volleyball, spa baths, bio-sauna, nudist sun tanning deck at the Jardim Atlantico Hotel, haute cuisine, jeep safaris, golf (soon), and so on. There are quite a few levadas in the surrounding area. The walk down to the picturesque fishing villages of Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar is especially invigorating. The climb down and back up requires some steady footing and gear!

To avoid disappointment we strongly recommend you book cottage well in advance!

Local Area Details

Come and sample this feast of breathtaking sheer cliffs overlooking the sea.

Let yourself succumb to the charms of Madeira. It is not difficult. First, there's the island's exceptional climate, with its mild temperatures all year round (between 16ºC and 25ºC) and its exuberant natural features and tropical vegetation, in which flowers and fruit have been turned into a genuine cult. Then there's its rich historical heritage and luxury hotels - attractions enough to satisfy even the most demanding of tourists.

First discovered by the Portuguese navigator Joao Goncalves Zarco, this beautiful island, 700 km from Casablanca and 900 km from Lisbon, soon became a major port of call for the caravels ploughing the waves on their way to the distant lands of the Far East.

Come and sample this feast of breathtaking beauty: sheer cliffs overlooking the sea, natural swimming-pools carved out of the rocks, high mountains swathed in mist, narrow footpaths running alongside the «levadas» or irrigation channels, offering the visitor the possibility of countryside walks in the midst of the most extraordinary landscape.

As soon as you arrive in Funchal, the island's capital, you will probably find yourself bumping into all kinds of famous people, for this is traditionally one of their favourite spots for a relaxing holiday. Overlooking a wide and sheltered bay, the city successfully blends together its special vocation as a tourist resort and its ability to provide all kinds of cultural events that testify to its history, amongst which one of the special highlights is its colourful festivals.
You will also certainly enjoy the traditional embroidery and basketwork, revealing the great talent and skilled hands of the island's inhabitants, who have produced some truly genuine works of art. Not forgetting the famous fortified «Madeira» wine, which for more than four hundred years has spread the name and flavour of the island all round the world.
It is well worth taking the time to extend your visit a little further to the north east so that you can discover the island of Porto Santo, roughly 40 km away. Although this is much flatter than its «mother-island», there is a wonderfully extensive beach waiting for you here, with sands that are famous for their great therapeutic properties. At Vila Baleira, the island's picturesque capital, you must make sure to visit the house where Christopher Columbus once lived.
