Local Area Details

St Antonin is a lively village that retains it French working character but still offers the visitor the amenities he would expect. Sitting at the bar in the village square overlooking the market place built by the villagers in the 19th century you can while away the hours enjoying the local wine, or something stronger, watching the world go by. A colourful market takes over the village on Sunday mornings, with stalls selling everything from local farm produce to more exotic herbs and spices.

Amongst the usual shops to be expected in a village there are a number of art galleries and craft shops all owned by local people selling their own work. The Ancien Hotel de Ville, built in 1125 is the oldest surviving example of civil architecture in France.

St Antonin is located roughly equidistant from Toulouse to the South West and Rodez to the North East offering easy access from both Airports in a little over an hour by road.

The natural landscape includes the gorges of the Aveyron and the Tarn, large areas of unspoilt natural forest and the attractive rolling countryside of the Gaillac vineyards.

The history of the region is dominated by the Cathar uprising, a period which has shaped the architectural and cultural heritage.

A hour's pleasant drive can take you to a number of outstanding locations, Bruniquel, a small village clinging to the side of a hill, with narrow streets lined with old stone houses. A walk to the chateau at the top affords both splendid views of the Aveyron Gorge and an interesting insight into the life style of the founders of the village.

Heading southeast you reach Cordes sur Ciel a small town built on the Tarns own "Sugar Loaf Mountain". The walk to the top of the town is a steep one but you are rewarded by a range of cafes and restaurants where you can replenish your energy levels. Craft shops abound selling local goods and is an excellent spot to purchase souvenirs of your visit.

Albi, which is 40km to the south east of St Antonin, is known as the Red Town due to its largely brick built buildings, dominating the town is St Cecilia's Cathedral, a somewhat austere building from a distance showing the eastern influences brought back from the Crusades. However as you get closer the strikingly decorated gothic additions become apparent, the highly decorated interior provides further contradiction to the rather plain facades. The Cathedral is the largest brick built building in Europe. Albi is also the birthplace of Toulouse Lautrec and the location of an outstanding museum housing a large collection of his works.

For those who admire mans ability to build structures which seem to defy nature the area is home to both the Viaur Viaduct, the largest iron bridge in Europe and the soon to be completed bridge over the Tarn at Millau which is the highest bridge in the world and has central columns which are higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Wine lovers can spend their days exploring the Gaillac area which can be reached in a leisurely hour's drive. There are a number of vineyards which offer both tours and tasting.

Outdoor activities abound in and around St Antonin, kayaks can be hired from several locations on the Aveyron, and they cater for lazy kayakers, you can paddle down stream and you are picked up in a bus to avoid the strain of upstream paddling! Despite being in a gorge and surrounded by high cliffs and mountains there are plenty of flat routes to cycle with cycle hire available in the village, of course for those more serious peddlers the mountains provide a fine challenge. Where you can cycle you can walk and similar gentle and more strenuous walks can be undertaken. Other attractions and activities include:

· Tennis
· Golf
· Swimming
· Quad biking
· Sailing
· Bird Watching

Cap Decouverte is a large outdoor activity centre built on the site of an enormous open cast mine. The centre provides numerous activities including cycle trails, skateboard parks, water skiing and the largest artificial ski slope in Europe.

A visit to Toulouse offers everything you would expect from a large city, shops, cafes, restaurants and many splendid building historic buildings. On the outskirts of the city lies Space City a theme park dedicated to learning about the universe, it can been seen from a considerable distance due to a space rocket which stands on its perimeter. It is also possible to visit the Aerospatiale factory where the manufacture of the Airbus can be seen.

On a more sporting front, Toulouse is the home of one of the most successful Rugby Union teams in Europe, the ground is conveniently situated beside the Autoroute on the way into Toulouse. Once a year the largest sporting event in the world, the Tour d'France, will pass somewhere not too far from the village, this is a spectacle not to be missed.

During the festival season events take place in many of the local towns and villages. Cordes has an annual festival with locals donning medieval costume before they parade through the steep streets culminating with jousting in the main square. August sees the wine festival in the town a Gaillac where you may sample the various produce before deciding on your favourite. July heralds the jazz festival in Montauban which played host to amongst others Bob Dylan in 2003.
