Local Area Details

There are direct flights to Paphos International Airport which is just 20 minutes by taxi or hire car drive from Casa Melania. Situated in Chloraka, located between Paphos and Coral Bay, the house is ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. A car is not essential and local buses run from near the complex up and down the coast and to town for a flat 50 cents. The best sandy beaches in Paphos are at Coral Bay just 5 kilometres, 15 minutes drive or a bus ride away. It is renowned for having the best sandy beach on the island with safe swimming and many sports facilities. Sub-aqua diving is available from several companies along the sea front.

A few hundred yards from the house (within sight but not sound) are two local restaurants, The Melania and The Aliceland, serving fresh fish and typical Cypriot dishes such as kebabs, souvlaki and kleftiko. There are local mini markets and a bakery just a couple of minutes walk away. Paphos town is the main tourist area is surrounded by bars, tavernas, and restaurants, there are many shops to browse around and further around the bay there are more bars and nightclubs, many open until the early hours. Paphos has a pretty harbour where one can still see the ancient Roman breakwater. There are many archaeological remains such as the House of Dionysos which has a fine mosaic floor. There are several old Greek churches, and The Tombs of the Kings, which are ancient burial places, are just outside the town and near the house.

The beautiful Akamas Peninsula is only a 15 minute drive away, a very quiet and unspoilt area which is ideal for walking, fishing, painting, bird and wildlife watching or just lazing in one of the deserted coves or bays. Cycling is a cheap and effective way of seeing the island. Facilities for renting bicycles are available in all towns and resorts, although the quality of the bicycles can vary considerably. The terrain offers many opportunities for mountain biking. Golf can be played on two courses on the island; the Tsada Golf Club, an 18-hole course, situated near Tsada village, 15 minutes drive north of Paphos town; and The Secret Valley Golf Club, also 18-hole, situated 18 km east of Paphos and 49 km from Limassol. The many unspoilt areas in Cyprus make the land ideal for hiking.

Recommended Nature Trails include Atalante, Kaledonia, and Persephone in the Troodos area and Aphrodite and Adonis in the Akamas area with other trails in the forests of Machairas and Limassol. Cyprus is also becoming established as a destination for winter sports with some hoteliers and tour operators are offering off-peak incentives. Both Platres and Kakopetria are conveniently placed for the skiing season on Mount Olympus, which usually lasts from January to mid-March, but Troodos is actually the nearest resort to the skiing area.

Health Care facilities are generally of a good standard. The emergency departments of all hospitals are manned with English-speaking personnel, although it is advisable to seek the assistance of an interpreter for more complex medical matters. Emergency medical treatment, administered in the Accident and Emergency department, is free to international tourists. International travellers are, however, advised to take out full medical insurance before departure. No health agreement exists with the UK.

Weather Report. Warm Mediterranean climate. Hot, dry summers with mild winters during which rainfall is most likely.

Required clothing. Lightweight cottons and linens during summer months; warmer medium weights and rainwear during the winter.
