Cottage in Andalucia, Spain

Property Details of Andalucia Cottage

Enjoy the true culture of rural Spain from this delightful property in the hills of Andalucia.

Rhonda is a comfortable and airy "vivienda" which has been fully restored while at the same time retaining may of its original features. The two bedrooms offer sleeping facilities for up 6.

The shady, vine-covered patio provides al-fresco living; whether it is for breakfast, lunch or dinner, relaxing with a book or sipping a glass of cava.

While the food is sizzling on the bar-be-que pit, the more energetic can stroll into the hamlet of "La Cruz de Algaida" and sample the local lifestyle.

The accommodation comprises one double bedroom and a second bedroom with twin beds and two pull-out beds.

All bed linen & towels are provided, however guests are requested to bring their own towels for sunbathing or swimming in the lake.

The living room offers comfortable seating for all the family as well as a TV, DVD and stereo system. Exploiting its position on the first floor is a balcony, off the living room, overlooking the surrounding olive groves and hills.

Downstairs there is an Andalucian kitchen with fridge/freezer, washing machine, gas oven and hob, microwave oven and toaster.

An archway leads into the separate dining room, which has a log-burner for the cooler evenings in the winter, and the shower room.

Stairs from the kitchen take you up to the two bedrooms and the sitting room.

Should you require additional accommodation, the adjoining "Marguerita" offers a further double bedroom and self contained living for two.

Please see our web site at: http://www.iznajarvillas.com/rhonda for further information about the house.

Local Area Details

Iznajar

The nearby, unspoiled, traditional white walled, red roofed village of Iznajar, with its castle dating from the 8th century and church from the 16th century, has spectacular views over a 32 km long lake which hosts a variety of water-sports and fishing.

Valdearenas beach

There is a beach on the lake where you can swim, rent pedalos and canoes, and learn to sail (and possibly other water sports). It tends to be busier on Sundays but is very quiet during the week, even in the height of the season. The water is beautiful to swim in, the bathing is safe and the beach has sand to lie on or for children to play in.

Fishing

The lake provides excellent course fishing, particularly carp. Many competitions are held along its banks. It is just over a quarter of a kilometre to walk through the olive groves and on down to the lake or you can take the car down very close to the water.

Golf

The world famous golf courses of the Costa del Sol are only an hour away and those of the Costa del Golf, including Valderrama, Sotogrande and San Roque, are about 1˝ hours away. The nearest 18 hole course is at Granada, set under a fabulous backdrop of the snow covered Sierra Nevada. The new course at Antequera is now open although currently only 9 holes. A further 9 holes are under construction and are planned to be open in April 2004.

Water sports

At Valdearenas beach there are facilities for a range of watersports. Swimming in the lake is wonderful, there is a sailing school right by the beach and you can rent pedalos and canoes. We have seen a windsurfer on the lake but, to date, have only experienced conditions there suitable for a novice rather than an experienced windsurfer. Apparently, you can also water-ski.

Cycling

Mountain biking and cycling are viewed as both serious sports and a relaxing pastime in Andalucía. It is not unusual to be overtaken by a group of lycra-clad cyclists tackling the steep mountain roads, particularly at weekends.

Not surprisingly, in a country with so many hills, mountain biking is a popular sport and better quality bikes can be rented in many mountain resorts. Bike hire, including helmet, gloves etc. is available within a few minutes drive of the house.

Walking

The countryside in much of Andalucía is breathtaking and one of the best ways to appreciate the diversity and beauty of the natural scenery is on foot. Iznajar is on the edge of the Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas providing enormous scope for interesting walks. Click on this link: Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas or on the map, for further information about the park, in English.

Guided hikes (or, for the more energetic, guided trail runs) are offered by a local company.

Climbing

Those who find hiking not quite exciting enough may like to try mountaineering, rock climbing or caving, all of which are popular in this part of Spain with a wealth of challenges and some of the best areas in Europe outside the Alps.

There are several mountaineering clubs and some challenging rock faces, particularly around the area of El Chorro.

Skiing

The ski resort of Sol y Nieve is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and is small in comparison with other European resorts. It has numerous runs, of varying difficulties, to satisfy all skiing desires. Natural snow is supplemented by snow cannons on some runs. Being so far south, many skiers are pleasantly surprised to find the air temperature is usually warmer than other resorts.

There is a surprisingly active nightlife in the Sierra Nevada resort. Spaniards have a reputation for being 'night owls' and this can be witnessed even in a skiing resort. Most of the visitors come from Madrid and the cities of Andalucia, weekends and banks holidays are particularly busy.

The season is December to April. The resort hosted the 1996 world ski championships.

Please see our web site at: http://www.iznajarvillas.com/rhonda for further information about the local area.
