Tyas Cottage, a recently restored cottage and barn, is located within a small hamlet on the site of the first water powered mill in the Colne Valley. It is south facing within the sheltered, wooded valley, Merrydale (a Site of Scientific Interest). It is at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac that is off an ancient, cobbled pack horse road (not open to vehicles). Apart from the sound of falling water, the property is quiet and rural. Merrydale is a beauty spot and its abundant bird life includes dippers, kingfishers, herons and sparrow hawks. Foxes are often seen and a deer was recently sighted.
The quality of the furnishings, mainly antiques, can be appreciated from the virtual tour on our website, www.yorkshire-holiday.co.uk, but special mention must be made of the Georgian mahogany 4 poster bed with its carved ceiling. There is access to a river and mill pond, so toddlers beware!

Local Area Details

Despite its secluded setting, Tyas Cottage is very close to numerous attractions. Slaithwaite railway station is on the Newcastle to Liverpool route and the M62 is also within 5 minutes journey time. The nearby canal and Standedge Tunnel have been recently restored, and it is within walking distance of the Pennine Way. The area also abounds with lovely walks on wild open moors or in sheltered valleys.
Television series ‘The Last of the Summer Wine’, ‘Where The Heart is’ and ‘Heartbeat’ are filmed within the region and Emmerdale Village can be visited.
