Local Area DetailsFrom the Pas-de-Calais Coast to the upland hillsides, the Boulonnais woodlands and pastures retain all the charms of a sheltered area. This undulating landscape, crisscrossed by hollows and streams, has a wonderful mix of hedgerowed prairies and copses.
The C�te d'Opale, from Wimereux to Escalles, was the first site to be classified a "grand national heritage site", in 1987, under the name of the "Two Capes Site". This cliff forming the edge of the Boulonnais hills is mercilessly excavated by a fierce ocean current and loses several dozen meters every century. Opposite the white cliffs of Dover, the 134 M tall Cap Blanc-Nez (literally white nose), made of chalk, and the 45-m tall Cap Gris-Nez (gray nose), made of a mix of sandstone, clay and limestone, gird the bay of Wissant. The bay has a long yellow sand beach bounded by a string of dunes separating it from the marshland.
