This split level maisonette sits on the bastions of the quiet historic town of Birgu (Vittoriosa) overlooking the Grand Harbour with Fort St. Angelo and the capital, Valletta, to the left and the quaint village of Kalkara to the right. Either walk down the front steps to the sea or around the narrow streets and alleys of Birgu or just sit at the balcony and take in the beautiful view and watch ships as they quietly come and go. Water taxis (dghajsa) are also nearby with which one can be ferried to Valletta for the afternoon or around the Grand Harbour for a romantic cruise at dusk. Local Area DetailsBirgu (Vittoriosa) is a peninsula that juts out into the Grand Harbour and boasts a proud and colourful history from the Phoenician times to the Normans, to the Knights of St John who fought the first great siege of Malta against the Turks at this site in 1565. The more recent British occupation of Malta also significantly transformed Brigu and the surrounding areas which culminated in the second great siege of Malta fought against the Luftwaffe in WWII. The city is built on history and when wandering through the old streets among the palaces, churches, auberges and docks or gazing out at the Grand Harbour one can get a sense of what took place there. Village life has not changed much over the centuries in Birgu for one still buys fresh traditional Maltese bread from the little bakery near the square, and fresh produce, cheese and fish from the peddling farmers and fishermen who make their daily rounds calling through the streets.
