Although Calheta was founded on the 1st of June 1502 by royal decree of Dom Manuel the Virtuous, the Municipal Assembly of the region stipulated that the anniversary would be celebrated on the 24th of June, coinciding with the holy day of São João.

People think that the name of this parish comes from its small bay, as that is the true meaning of the word ‘calheta’.
This parish is one of the oldest of the island and was one of the first to be explored by the primitive colonisers. This area is also famous for its wide variety of fish.

Surrounded by rocks and almost caressing the ocean, Calheta presents you with a wide and precious religious heritage.
