Local Area DetailsThe Catlins in the south east corner of the South Island of New Zealand is a land of forested hill country and with a rudded coast. The coast is clean and rich in sub-antarctic wildlife such as penguins, sealions and sea birds, it has many beautiful remote beaches backed by old-growth native podocarp forest. The inland valleys are partly farmed and the landscape is rich and varied. There are many walking opportunites.
Additional InformationAbout Weather/Climate/TemperatureThis is mild maritime temperate climate area - rainfall is 42 inches per annum - evenly distributed. Temperatures are mild all year averaging a between 50 and 80 degrees F winter to summer. The weather is changeable and wet weather clothing is recommended.
About BeachesThe beaches of the Catlins vary in length up to several miles long, they have light coloured fine sand and are bounded by dramatic looking cliffs and headlands. The beaches provide excellent walking oportunities.
About Scenery/Beauty SpotsAs well as the excellent beaches, the Catlins abounds in scenic coastal and inland lookouts, waterfalls and native forest walks.
About WalkingWalking opportunities vary from many 1-2 hour walks to a few day walks and two opportunities for two day walks. These walks are generally through varied native forests, along beaches and through verdant farmland.
