WINTER

Whilst not as well known to the British as its neighbour Crans-Montana, Anzère is a gem of a resort. As an attractive, smaller mountain village, Anzère is a refreshing change from many of the soulless purpose-built ski resorts in the Alps. Its retains its own unique character, and is renowned for friendly locals and vibrant après-ski. The variety of pistes should keep all but the most advance skiers happy for a week.

"The resort lies at 1500 metres and the fantastic skiing rises to over 2400 metres. The people of Anzere are exceptionally friendly, and the atmosphere is very relaxed, both on and off the piste. Ski data: Village at 1500m with skiing to 2500 m. 1 cable car, 2 chair lifts, 8 drag lifts. 15 pistes, total length 40 km (20 % easy, 60 % intermediate, 20 % difficult), snowboard park and halfpipe at 1900m. English speaking Swiss ski school for group or private lessons. Beginner’s ski lift on nursery slope in the village. Snow Kindergarten on village square. 6km cross country ski trails, 30km winter footpaths. 2 toboggan-runs. Ice skating rink. Heli-skiing on the Wildhorm glacier (3,247m). Ski shuttle bus.

Stunning mountain vistas are the backdrop for long balmy days spent walking, cycling, golfing (4 golf courses within 20km), exploring cultural attractions, or just relaxing by the village pool.

Balcony overlooks outdoor village pool (heated), which is just 2 minutes' walk.

Walking:
166km of marked footpaths. Network of paths surrounding the village. Take the Gondola to access higher trails, or follow the "bisses", irrigation channels unique to the Valais. Keen hikers can head up into the high Audannes mountains, beneath the Wildhorn.

Golf:
10 superb golf courses in the Valais, the nearest, which are all within 20 kms, being:
* Crans-Montana - 18 hole Severiano Ballesteros course is
the finest golf course in the Alps and hosts the European Masters tournament each September. Greg Norman wrote, "this is by far the most spectacular tournament site in the world". Also the 9 hole Jack Nicklaus course.
* Sion - 18 holes. On the plains of the Rhone valley, overlooked by the castles of Valère and Tourbillon
* Sierre - 9 holes in serene, natural surroundings.
