About History

The village "Fiestas" are celebrated on the 3rd of May.La Santa Cruz. Then there is the Patron Saint´s day. 29th Sept. Music, TROVAS, RICE DISHES AND MUSIC.The main attraction is the proccesion of the saint around the steep village on the shoulders of the local folk. The church is the largest in all the Alpujarras.

About Scenery/Beauty Spots

The town is 1114 m. above sea .Murtas is for those that like to walk and hike, there are many forest paths in the area of the Cerrajon. Surrounded by a pine forest. There is also the possiblity to drive up to 500 metres from the top, which is the highest point on the Contraviesa. From here you can see the Sierra Nevada, Sierra Gador,the sea and on clear days the African MTS.and practically all the villages in the Alpujarras. Much wildlife to be seen, which includes,Mountain goat,Hares,Rabbits,Wild Boar, Partrige, Wild Cat and a large variety of birdlife. This is a nature lovers paradise.

The Alpujarras is a beautiful nature area and close to the Sierra NEVADA Nature Park.

About Driving

Driving from Almeria. Take road to Berja, then turn off out of toWn to Turron and then continue to cross roads, left to Murtas. ANOTHER ROUTE is to continue in the direcction of Motril and then turn left up to Rabita and continue to cross roads. This is also the best way if you are coming from Malaga.

About Beaches

The beaches are 30 klms away, plus a large Marina and golf course in AlmeriMar and the beaches of Adra. The ski resort is in the Sierra Nevada. In Murtas is the Co-Op which produces the famous Arab honey and almond sweets and cakes called El Murtaño. This area is famous for its Almonds, Figs, Wine and honey.

The Bar/Resturant "El Pinche" the main center of the village life and a small Dicotec below,that opens on weekends. Nearby (5 klms)is another one, plus a wine cellar called 4 Vientos.(4 winds) There is also a resevoir 20kilms below for those that would like to canoe.(not included)
