Property Details of Scotland Cottage

Our accommodation is in two houses dating back to the mid 1800s, Stroma and Bankhead, which are located in the oldest part of Gardenstown village. Both buildings are very close to the sea and only five minutes apart. Included in the rent is clean bed linen and towels, fuel for the fires, books, games, CD player, videos and optional telly/video. The fully equipped kitchens include microwave, washing machine and have the basics of coffee, teas and condiments.

Stroma
Stroma is a traditionally built granite home that straddles the steep ground between two roads, a moment's walk from the harbour. There is accommodation for 8 people (up to 10 for short periods), in four bedrooms, three twin, one with a double and a single. There is space for a cot in each of the rooms. The large open plan kitchen/dining/living room has a timber floor, wood burning stove and deep sofas. There are shower room/wcs, on both the ground and first floors, with central heating throughout.

Studio
The Stroma studio space is 6m x 12m (20' x 40'), used in the past as net drying room and religious meeting hall and Gardenstown's first school. There is ample natural and assisted light, perfect for painting. There are drawing boards, easels, tables, chairs, sink, and tea/coffee making facilities. (We can also provide specific equipment or materials if requested). It also has a wood burning stove and sofas for those breaks away from work - or as a place to send the kids ...

Bankhead
Bankhead provides accommodation for 6 people in 3 twin rooms. This warm, fully equipped and comfortable home occupies the two floors above Gallery 83, the Creative retreat's unique art and gift shop, in the heart of old Gardenstown. It is sited close to the bakery and general store and village pub. Bankhead has wonderful sea views, a wood burning stove in the living room and central heating throughout.

Physical Access
Gardenstown is built down the side of a steep cliff, with many steps and steep slopes - if you have mobility problems please talk to us before you book. Our new High Street Studio is completely accessible with wheelchair access toilet and Stroma, our larger house, has two bedrooms, toilet and living/kitchen on the same level. Bankhead is reached by stairs, with all accommodation on the first and second floors.

Ever wanted to try some painting or drawing but didn't have the courage, time or materials? We can supply you with everything you need. During your holiday we'll provide you with the materials of your choice a short tuition session to get you started and a follow-up session to keep you going. Starting for as little as £20 we will get you into the flow with expert guidance.

Local Area Details

The Creative Retreat is located in Gardenstown, a small 18th century fishing village clinging to the rock of Scotland's north east coast, with a restaurant, post office, general store, pub and good restaurant. We are just over an hour north of Aberdeen and two hours east of Inverness along the Moray Coast. Known for its high levels of summer sunshine and beautiful light, this coast has hidden coves, bronze-age sites, whisky distilleries, golf courses and forests to experience. Only a short distance away you'll find riding centres, boat trips and quiet golden beaches.

Gardenstown has a rich jumble of 18th and 19th century fishing cottages, a sandy beach with rock pools, safe streets and a small harbour to explore. There are plenty of activities and places to visit in the local area, including a trip to see the Moray Firth dolphins, the Macduff Marine Aquarium, Banff's summer Carnival of Youth (mid June) and Portsoy's Traditional Boat Festival (end June). If you have children, a 15 minute drive takes you to the Duff House adventure playground and woods, and a further 15 minutes to the giant indoor play centre at Williamsons Garden Centre, Turriff. Children are also welcome to use the Creative Retreat's large studio spaces as play areas, and we can provide art sessions for all ages. If you need fireguards, cots, baby back-carriers, baby baths and so on, we are happy to help.
