Local Area DetailsAlpujarras are the Arab word for "meadows". There is a saying that the air there is still just as pure as on the first creation day. The Alpujarras, a small chain of mountains, about fifty kilometres south of Granada, offer beautiful views on the snowy mountain tops of the Sierra Nevada, which is the highest chain of mountains of the Spanish continent. Experienced walkers will gladly go for the confrontation with the highest tops of continental Spain: the Mulhacén (3481m) and the Veleta (3398m). But also for less experienced mountain-walkers this bit of Andalusia is a dream, a paradise for walking and hiking excursions, which you should absolutely not miss!
Here you find a wide range of charming, timeless, very attractive little villages, surrounded by superb panoramas and changing landscapes, hardly damaged by the nearness of the excitement of the coast.
Between most of the villages there are footh-paths which were used by the "moriscos" for their trade or for their cattle; these days they are in use as "GR-paths". Thus GR-7 is completely provided with signs in the Alpujarras. However, locally the signs are not very clear to read, so therefore a good map is essential.

Additional InformationAbout WalkingThe south slopes of the Sierra Nevada, the area for walking, has an irrigation system of Moor origin which ensures that you can walk the complete year in a surprising green landscape.
The foot-paths partially go over the GR-7 and over the recently constructed GR-142, leading through chestnut groves, but also over very old cattle-routes and paved mule-paths. During your walking-tours you come along many sources where you can quench your thirst.
