Cottage in Normandy, France

Property Details of Normandy Cottage

The cottage is rural and quiet but not isolated.
This pretty little granite cottage was professionally restored to a high standard and it offers you a living room/kitchen with a traditional Normandy fireplace, beamed ceiling, terracotta floor, fridge, electric rings and oven, and comfortable furnishings. A wood-burning stove ensures a welcome whatever the season with electric heaters to augment it if necessary. Best of all, it feels like a home. Television with Sky Channels, a video player and good videos, a radio and paperbacks will all provide you with a relaxing accompaniment to yet another glass of wine. Up the open-tread staircase there is a sweet little, prettily decorated double-bedded room and a spacious en-suite shower-room with a marble-topped vanity unit and toilet. Artefacts and ornaments all add to the cottage’s charm.

Guests in our first few seasons have been very complimentary about the cottage and things to do in the area. We look forward to welcoming you too. If you are seeking property yourselves we are happy to help or advise in any way we can – using our own experiences and knowledge of the area.

You will find the cottage in a hamlet, poised on the southwest border of the Departments of Calvados and Manche. It is about 9 miles southwest of Vire and about 40 minutes from the coast at Avranches. The village of Champ du Boult which has a General Store and Bar, a baker and tennis courts is just about a mile away. The same distance to the south is St Michel de Montjoie with similar shops, as well as a Granite Museum and Sculpture Park. Both villages feature on the Normandy Granite trail. We have an 18th century farmhouse and the attached cottage. Both are quietly situated among lanes and fields, with a well-tended garden to relax in and enclosed parking. There are outdoor tables, chairs, recliner chairs and a barbecue. In August 1944 La Boelle was occupied by fleeing Germans one morning and American GIs the same afternoon! Close by is a tiny chapel and spring dedicated to St Claire. The spring is said to cure eye-complaints and local people go there to bathe their eyes. The Caen ferry terminal is little more than an hour away, Cherbourg is about a half hour more and St Malo a similar distance. From Euro tunnel it’s about four and a half hours by an excellent autoroute.

The cottage well equipped and supplied, including such things as-
Toilet rolls, new pan scrubber and dish cloth, torch, sharp knives, two rectangular pillows per person, a lightweight double duvet in summer, a heavier one in spring and autumn, extra blanket, throw, tv, video player, radio, clock, fly-swatter, an excellent supply of good books and videos, fire extinguisher, hair-dryer, tea/coffee making facilities upstairs, iron and ironing board, electric kettle, electric fan, candles, barbecue, folder with extensive local and tourist information. (Please note that the staircase is slightly steeper than usual and has uncarpeted open steps but has a firm handrail and normal treads). If having access to a washing machine is important, please enquire.

Local Area Details

Vire, about 9 miles to the northwest is a bustling town with excellent supermarkets and a reputation for fine food. There is a twice-weekly market, and a mouth-watering selection of restaurants and specialist food shops. Picturesque Villedieu-les-Poeles produces renowned copperware—you’ll find examples in the cottage. It has the most wonderful Tuesday market spilling out through all the streets, many authentic copper workshops, a bell foundry, lace museum, Norman furniture museum and an interesting maze of pretty alleyways to explore.
Walk, ride, fish, play golf or wind-surf at near-by Lake Dathee: picnic and wander in The St Sever National Forest, take up invitations to taste cheese, cider or Calvados—or be spoilt for choice over which of our stunning local restaurants to visit next – our favourite two are both about 5 miles away. From the near-by village of St Michel de Montjoie you can enjoy the wonderful panoramic view that takes in Mont Saint Michel – or visit their Granite Museum and Sculpture Park in summer. There are excellent walks directly from the cottage and villages around – with glow worms, dormice and red squirrels seen in our lane and wild-boar and deer occasionally visit from the forest. In springtime the hedgerow flowers are wonderful and in summer we see so many different butterflies and birds. Mont St Michel, Granville, Bayeux, Avranches, the coast with its long sandy beaches, promenades and fine seafood, and WW II sites and memorials are all within easy reach. There are a host of leaflets suggesting interesting places to visit – as well as our own printed itineraries we enjoy and recommend. Or you can just relax…
