Canda House holiday apartment in the Mayenne France
Unique exterior features
Apartment in Pays de la Loire, France
Property Details of Pays de la Loire Apartment
Situated on the outskirts of the small town of Ernee, we are 5 minutes from the town centre in one direction, while a couple of minutes walk in the other takes you into the French countryside. We are also just 1km from the international motocross track.
We are ideally situated for both Brittany and Normandy, or exploration of the beautiful Loire valley (famous for its chateaux).
Formerly a barn and hayloft, we have completely renovated the top floor of the two storey building into a comfortable apartment capable of sleeping 4 people.
From the unique entrance, to the shutters which were previously barn doors, to the exposed beams, we have retained many of the features and incorporated them into a light and spacious apartment comprising a living room (with sofa bed), dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom and double bedroom.
Gas and electricity are included in the price, as are towels, tea-towels and bedlinen. A travel cot and highchair are also available if required. Please feel free to join us in our small garden in the evenings (weather permitting), and also use our barbecue if you wish.
For further details please contact Alan and Chris on 02 43 30 35 86, mobile: 06 06 60 58 56, or visit our website http://www.mayennebreak.com
Local Area DetailsJust over the border from Brittany, we are only about an hours drive from the beautiful beaches of the Emerald Coast, and also an ideal stopover point for travellers to the West coast or southern France.
There is an abundance of places of interest within easy driving distance such as Mont-St-Michel, Pontmain, museums, zoos and Adventure parks.
In the immediate area there are plenty of lakes for the fisherman, off road walks, gardens (the French are very proud of their “fleurie‿ towns and villages) and of course the international motocross track (less than 1km away).
You can also visit local farms and sample the local ciders, dairy products and meats (including the goat farm which produces various items of clothing and rugs made from their wool).
About FerriesFrom St Malo to Dunkirk, ferry crossings are available at a time to suit you. Prices vary from budget to luxury, depending on the company and route. Caen is the closest to us at just 2 hours drive whilst the shortest crossing time is from Dover to Boulogne with Speedferries. Other companies include SeaFrance, P & O, Brittany Ferries and Norfolk Line. Ferrysavers.com is a good source for information on crossings, prices and availability.
About WalkingWalking is a favourite pastime in France, and this is borne out by the number of off-road walks available. Detailed maps can be purchased for the commune of Ernée, which includes 15 towns or villages, and gives suggestions of various routes together with places of interest on the way such as the dolmens and menhirs of the region, local sculptures (including those of the world famous sculptor Louis Derbré) and other historical and cultural features.
About ShoppingErnée has a choice of supermarkets for basic provisions, together with an abundance of patisseries, boulangeries and other small French traditional shops. The local market is held on a Tuesday morning, and, although not big, has a wide variety of stalls with many local crafts and produce. Further afield, the larger towns of Laval, Fougères and Mayenne supply shops of all types and descriptions.
About Local RestaurantsThere are plenty of places to eat out in the town. They vary from a self-service cafeteria (only at lunchtimes), to kebab house, pizza restaurant, creperie as well as quieter and more select restaurants. They are all reasonably priced and welcome families and children. Most can speak a little English so if your French isn't too good, no problem.
About Family ActivitiesDays Out
Mont-Saint-Michel: There are many things to see and to do; the main street with its shops, the museums, the walk around the ramparts with views out over the sands of the bay, as well as the spectacle of the sea rushing in to surround the Mont at each high tide. Other attractions include the Archeoscope (mulimedia show), the Tiphaine lodge and night visits to the abbey.
La Foret de Villecartier: A miniature port has been fitted out there where young and old can navigate in mockup boats, which are copies of ferries, boats with paddle wheels or tug boats. A course of 3 km opened in July 2005 in the trees. there is also a quiet fishing lake just a short walk through the trees.
L'Ange Michel Leisure Park: With more than 30 attractions there is something for everyone including aquatics, adventure, history and culture, and even a snack bar.
There are also the usual museums, chateaux and even troglodyte caves for those keen to explore and discover the area.
About Children ActivitiesIn the local town there is a heated swimming pool which is open to the public. There is also a park with various amusements, including a crazy golf course and BMX track, childrens adventure course in the woods, as well as the usual climbing frames, swings, etc. The local motocross track holds various events throughout the year which are sure to be of interest to children (young and old). Slightly further afield (15 - 20 min drive) there are a couple of man-mad beaches. Clean, tidy and not usually too crowded.
About FishingAs with most French towns and villages, Ernée has its own lake. The majority of these lakes are available for fishing. Permits can be purchased from various shops and tabacs for a very low cost. Ask Alan for more information as he is a keen fisherman himself. There are also numerous rivers, but permits for these are a lot more expensive.
About Airport InformationBoth Rennes and Dinard airports are reasonably close (an hour to an hour and a half driving time) and have regular flights from budget airlines such as Ryanair and Flybe. If you need to hire a vehicle during your stay, this can be arranged at either airport with some of the most well known hire companies.
