Local Area DetailsEssaouira is 175kms from Marrakech and about the same distance from Agadir on the Atlantic coast. It has a fantastic beach for swimming and surfing. The old town (Medina)is famous for its art gallerys for wood carvings and the working port for its sea food. Essaouira was in the 60s a hippy destination where such as Cat Stevens, Jimmy Hendrix and others came to chill out. Essaouira has much to offer for those who just want to relax or for the more active. Wander round the souks. Find a small resturant down an alley. Wind or Kite surf off the safest beach in Africa.
Excursions can be arranged to places like the Atlas Mountains or the Sahara Desert or week-ends in Marrakech.

About Beaches
The beach at Essaouira is comprised of hard packed sand that is washed by the Atlantic Ocean twice a day. The beach stretches for over three miles around the bay. As it shelves very gradually the beach is ideal for swimming and water sports and is safe for families with young children.

There are many restaurants and cafés in Essaouira. From the traditional Moroccan to international cuisine eating places can be found in the Medina or along the sea front. Try the fresh fish booths in the main square or visit 'Chez Sam' in the port for really great fish dinners.
