Set in the heart of Hardy's Wessex close to the Heritage Coast, Poppy's Cottage is situated in the ancient farming hamlet of West Elworth, not far from Abbotsbury Swannery & Sub-tropical Gardens. The hamlet is a rural haven comprising of only six dwellings together with a small dairy farm.
Poppy's is an extremely spacious, detached cottage with its own parivate garden. Extensively renovated 2003 to include all modern facilities, care has been taken to retain a nostalgic cottage ambience, enchanced by oak beams and wooden doors with furnishings contemporary but sympathetic to period style. Although centrally heated, an impressive inglenook fireplace with wood-burning stove provides a warming glow for cooler evenings.
Poppy's cottage is fully equipped to provide for children of all ages with cot, highchair, baby equipment, bed-guards, stair-gates, play pen, books and games available. Every effort has been made to ensure the safety of the children whilst the adults relax and unwind!
Elworth hamlet is a walker's paradise with footpaths in all directions. The Dorset Coast Path runs along the top of the hill above the hamlet leading down into Abbotsbury village 2 miles away. The views from the coast path along the Heritage coast are simply stunning - eastwards towards Lulworth & Ringstead Bay, Portland and Chesil Bank and westwards across Lyme Bay.

Local Area Details

Abbotsbury is an ancient village with its historic past still in evidence from the topography: from the Neolithic tumuli to the Celtic hill fort above the village and the Saxon strip-lynchets. The village is still owned by the descendants of the Earl's of Ilchester/Strangways who purchased the village and surrounding lands from Henry V111 after the dissolution of the monastery in 1539. Today this unspoilt village provides craft and antique shops, historic Tithe Barn with children's farm, an old coaching inn and of course cream teas! The walk to St. Catherine's chapel above the village provides stunning views across Lyme Bay and the surrounding countryside.
The County town of Dorchester, with a wealth of museums and archaeological sites, lies 9 miles to the north-east of Elworth hamlet. The beaches of Weymouth Bay are 7 miles to the east and the old fishing village of West Bay with the historic town of Bridport lies 8 miles to the west.
West Dorset has it all: Houses & Gardens open to the public, Museums, Water-sports, Horse Riding, Fishing, Nature Reserves, Sea-life centre, Archaeological sites, Guided Tours, Zoology parks, Historic enactments, Theatres, Cinemas, Golf to name but a few of the attractions - but not least of all there is the simply wonderful landscape where you can walk, picnic and watch the plentiful wildlife.
