The tiny hamlet of La Ruelmain lies at the edge of the beautiful Vilaine valley with its wide skies and ever changing colours. It is on a slight rise where water meadows (marais) meet the woodland and farms of the commune of St Dolay. Its ancient stone houses date from the 16th century. The chaumiere (=thatched cottage) has been lovingly restored in tune with the beauty and simplicity of its surroundings. It is perfect for couples who want to 'get away from it all'.

It has a charming small garden with a vine-covered patio where it is easy to while away the hours. The road in the rear of the picture peters out within 100 yards to become a track across the marais down to the river.

It is an old building in local stone with a thatched roof. The original timbers have been preserved in an ingenious restoration. The kitchen and shower room, with the bedroom on an open gallery above, occupy half the floor space; the remainder is open to the rafters.

Downstairs has a tiled floor, with a wood-burning stove, dining table and chairs, easy chair, settee, bookshelves and a dresser.

There is a gas cooker and electric fridge in the kitchen area. The bathroom has shower, WC and small handbasin. Water heating is by gas. The interior is dim and cool, but a glass door leads into a low sunroom, which in turn opens onto the vine-covered patio and a private south-facing garden. It is comfortable for two, but (warning for tall people - 6 foot plus) some doorways are quite low - it might not suit you !

Out and about
Local towns for main shopping are La Roche Bernard (market day Thursday) and Redon (market day Monday), charming and ‘typical’ small French towns. Redon has several supermarkets and a cinema. Nearest shops are at St. Dolay (5 km) with mairie, bars, small supermarket, butcher, boulangerie, garage and pharmacy.

Chill out in the gardens.
Fishing, boating and swimming in the Vilaine.
Eat at any of several good restaurants in Redon and La Roche Bernard.
Walk and cycle freely from La Ruelmain along tracks, paths and quiet country lanes.

Sea and beaches at La Baule (crowded), Penestin, Le Croisic and Golfe du Morbihan.
The Nantes - Brest Canal passes through Redon.
