Local Area DetailsShorncliffe is the original dress circle of Brisbane. The suburb is located on Moreton Bay and is dotted with many grand historical homes and beach cottages where the elite and gentry alike flocked to each week at the turn of the century for fun and relaxation at the ?beach?. A quote from our local historical publication states, ? the pretty town of Sandgate/Shorncliffe is undoubtedly well situated, being on rising ground sloping up from the seashore, which is admirable constructed by Nature for a bathing ground?. Brisbane?s population obviously agreed. From May 1882 when the railway was opened, increasing numbers of people sought out this ?charming health resort, where always, even on the warmest day, a cool breeze blows..? ? During the last two decades of the 19th century Sandgate/Shorncliffe was transformed from a tranquil backwater into a bustling seaside resort with many of the trappings of its counterparts on the south coast of Victorian England. A pier, numerous bathing boxes, a profusion of boarding houses, a number of hotels and all manner of shops now added to Shorncliffe?s natural attractions. On New Year?s Day 1899 when some 8000 people journeyed by train to Sandgate/Shorncliffe a forty year old prediction was finally fulfilled; Sandgate/Shorncliffe had truly emerged as the ?Brighton of the Brisbanites?.
Today Shorncliffe is enjoying a resurgence of it?s turn of the century popularity. Although many old buildings have disappeared, the Grand homes of the area are being restored to their former glory of which Naracoopa is one of them.
