Local Area Details

There is much history in Wanganui and the surrounding area. Visitors should try and stay a minimum of 2 days to get a taste of some of the offerings.
Wanganui is NZ's 3rd oldest settlement and has some lovely old buildings, many of them restored and painted in 'heritage colours'. Children enjoy doing the 'Brass-rubbing Trail' around the city centre. The Museum has a wonderful collection of Maori artifacts and a re-created Wanganui Street from Victorian times.
A leisurely river trip can be taken on the paddle steamer, the most original one in NZ and restored and re-launched at midnight, 1 January 2000 as part of Wanganui's millennium celebrations.
Jet boat trips are only a few minutes away and can be from 1.5 hours to all day. The all-day trip to the famous Bridge to Nowhere is an excellent way to learn more of the river's history and to experience the scenic beauty of a bygone era. You can also drive along the River Road to Pipiriki stopping at little places along the way such as Koroniti (where you can experience a Marae stay), Atene (famous for its skyline all-day tramp), and Jerusalem (made famous by both Mother Suzanne Aubert and James K Baxter). At Pipiriki you may wish to take a jet boat to the Bridge to Nowhere or continue along the road to Raetihi, returning to Wanganui via State Highway 4.
There are also many homestays and self-contained cottages dotted along the river so you could combine a river experience with your stay in Wanganui. Whatever you decide to do we can help with more information.

About Shopping
Although Wanganui is a reasonably small city it has many interesting specialty shops. Antique and second-hand shops feature as do art galleries and craft shops.About ParksWanganui has many parks from sportsgrounds to playgrounds. The children's favourite is Kowhai Park which is a good old-fashioned playground complete with Tot-Town Train ride, a pirate ship and castle, a dinosaur slide and octopus swing. All ages enjoy the beauty of Bason Botanical Reserve a few minutes out of town. It is a favourite place for picnics in the summer months and has spectacular gardens throughout the year with specialty plantings.About GolfingWanganui has three golf course - one 9-hole and two top-class 18 hole. They are within 10km of the city centre.About Scenery/Beauty SpotsYou are spoilt for choice in this area. What ever direction you venture, the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful ranging from rugged farmland, majestic mountains, serene lakes and idyllic river country.About BeachesThe west coast beaches are 'wild beaches' - black sand, lots of driftwood. The water temperature is slightly warmer than that of the east coast but people should take care when swimming to stay on a patrolled beach. The beach is wonderful for walking along especially at the end of the day to view the sunset.About Weather/Climate/TemperatureWanganui enjoys a temperate climate. It was known to have the fourth most temperate climate in the world! Arles is very sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds and is generally 2 degrees warmer than in the city.
