La Chassagne is an old farmstead located in the rural tip of the Auvergne, France. Dutch couple Jan Schuit and Marijke Schuit-Frowijn have created on their rural estate a quiet, small camping site along with a few holiday cottages.

The holiday cottages of La Chassagne are housed in the ancient buildings of the farmstead. The buildings border on a sheep meadow, the vegetable garden, and a forest full of birds. Because La Chassagne is situated on a hilltop, the cottages look out over a hedged landscape - valleys fringed with wooden banks.

The spacious Lumberjack's House, la Maison du Bûcheron, is located in part of the original main house of the farmstead La Chassagne. From the patio, you look out over a little stream valley where cows graze. From the front of the house you walk onto the 'cour': the courtyard of La Chassagne.

Local Area Details

Allow us to walk you through the extensive domain of la Chassagne, which consists of two creek valleys, several hills, and a lot of forest and meadows. Walking, we come upon towers of the time of the middle ages, we cross untamed creeks, and wander over meadow and through woods. Cycling, the rural river dale of the river Cher is within our reach, as well as the medieval town of Montluçon, and Néris les Bains: health resort since the time of the Romans. Finally, in the afternoon, the children plunge into the swimming pool at the camping, to cool off.


Places Of Interest:

-Gorges de la Sioule, with Chateau de Chauvigny. The river Sioule winds itself throught the spectacular rock valley, with its several splendid panoramas, amongst which the mediaeval castle of Chauvigny.

-The Roman bridge, Pont de Menat. This ancient bridge not only spans the river Sioule, but also almost two millennia.

-Montluçon and Montaigut with their mediaeval town centres. The town of Montluçon was once a fortified town: the old citadel is a witness of this era, situated on a steep hill in the centre of town.

-Néris les Bains and Vichy with their thermal baths. Both places are health resorts since the time of the Romans. You might already know the pure waters of the wells nearby the city of Vichy, in bottled form, as mineral water.

-Take a trip back in the past, visit the mediaeval village of Charroux.

-For the wine-taster, the town of Saint Pourçain, well known for its wines, which go by the same name.

-Parc des Volcans: the area of vulcanos, right in the middle of the Auvergne. One can walk in craters, scattered through a landscape full of extinct vulcanos, of which the Puy de Dôme is the most famous one.

-Viaduct de Fades, designed by mr. Eifel, who is best known for another one of his projects, in Paris.


Recreational Possibilities:

-There are several small lakes in the vicinity of La Chassagne where one can go fishing with a license.

-St. Eloy les Mines, at a distances of about 7 km, has a 'plan d'eau', where one can swim, fish, and go windsurfing.

-The rivers Sioule and Cher lend themselves for excellent canoe trips. There are several addresses to rent canoes.

-A challenging rock climbing area can be found in Lignerolles - about 18 km off La Chassagne, suitable for both the advanced and the starting rock climber.
