LOCAL TOURISM INFO
ABOUT THE ABACO ISLANDS

The Abaco Islands: A Sea Farers Paradise!
The Abaco Islands, located 75 miles north of Nassau, are the northern most of the Bahamian Islands. This group of islets, islands, and cays runs together in a dogleg shape that stretches over 120 miles in the Atlantic. The islands are a vacationing paradise, and along with the other Bahama Islands, draw more than 3 million visitors a year. No wonder! A day's itinerary can include scuba diving, sailing, snorkeling, parasailing, kayaking, fishing, beach combing, or just laying claim to a piece of white sand and working on your tan.

Ever since Ponce de Leon sailed through the islands in 1513 in search of the fountain of youth, the Abaco Islands have had a love affair with sea farers. Known as "The Sailing Capital of the World," yachting is certainly the number one activity, drawing sailors from all over the world during the annual Regatta Time, a raucous mixture of sailboat races and cocktail parties. The regatta takes place in early July and is an excellent example of the relationship between islanders and the sea. Marinas at West End, Marsh Harbour, or Walker's Cay have plenty of boats for hire to take visitors on excursions to the surrounding islands.

If sailing is king in Abaco, then diving is the crown prince. Like all of the Bahamian Islands, Abaco is chock full of reef dives, wall dives, wrecks, and caves that will challenge all skill levels. An interesting dive is known locally as The Pillars, for the pillar coral that is exclusive to the area. In addition to the rare coral, the reef has a thriving population of trigger fish that make for great photo ops. Another popular dive is the Wreck of the San Jacinto, the first U.S. steamship built for ocean travel, which sank in 1865. Parts of the hull are still visible, and the wreck is teeming with sea life. It is not uncommon to be visited by Nassau groupers or moray eels while visiting the site. For some pure adrenaline pumping fun, try your hand at Walker's Cay Shark Dive. A school of sharks, some approaching 10 feet in length, approach divers as they try and feed the dangerous hoard. Sly barracudas have been known to join in the fray from time to time.

The beaches on Abaco usually fall into two categories: rowdy or relaxed. For example, on Great Abaco at Treasure Cay, Ocean Beach rolls out a wide expanse of uncrowded, sugary sand, arcing elegantly around a shallow turquoise bay. But on the eastern end, Ocean Beach has all the bustle and attractions of the true tourist beachfront. You'll find lots to do, and every service will be at your fingertips. Waterskiing, windsurfing, seaside restaurants, beach bars, and local entertainment -- if you can think of it, you'll probably find it here. If all you need is a place to plant your beach umbrella, visit Tahiti Beach at Elbow Cay and Guana Cay Beach at Great Guana Cay. Both offer grand stretches of white sand, and a relatively low traffic flow.

In Abacos, all anglers have to do is toss in a line and the sea will provide a bounteous gift. Deep-sea fishing, and bone fishing, a type of fly fishing, are also popular endeavors in the islands. Fishing is excellent throughout these Islands, with Walker's Cay, Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay attracting many fishermen for summer tournaments. Record catches of marlin, sailfish and tuna have been recorded here. Many qualified guides know the reefs and underwater rises that create shallow-water havens for huge numbers of fish, practically ensuring success for expert and novice alike. The marinas around Hope Town are special favorites for prospective fish hunters.

Birding enthusiasts will appreciate the Abaco National Park, located about 35 miles south of Marsh Harbour. This 2500 acre park is dedicated to the preservation of the Bahama parrot. The parrot, known to locals as "the rainbows in the sky," is an endangered species found only on Abaco and Great Inagua. The park is heavily forested and is also home to warblers, West Indian woodpeckers, yellowthroats, fly catchers, and Cuban Emeralds.

What defines a great vacation place? Is it the almost endless sunshine? Is it the amount of activities available? Is it the seemingly never ending supply of white sand beaches? Is it the sight of sailboats catching a wind and riding a spraying sea? Is it enjoying great food while watching the sun dip into the Atlantic? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then the Abaco Islands is the place for you!
