Allen Mill is a very comfortable, cosy, stone terraced cottage with a relaxed "home from home" atmosphere. It is decorated and equipped to a very high standard, offering all we imagine you might require for a quiet relaxing holiday in this beautiful part of Britain.
Local Area DetailsThe cottage lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty close to the East Allen river. Its a wonderful mix of moor and dale.
Cycle or walk from the doorstep and see more wildlife than human inhabitants. Wild life includes such rarities as the red squirrel, peregrine falcon, goshawk, mountain saxifrage and orchids. Allendale village centres on the market square. There are several pubs to try real ales live music and food There's a gift shop, tea shop, a friendly coop, chemist, post office, hairdresser and butcher. All just a mile from the cottage.
Every New Year the square fills with revellers enjoying the famous Fire Festival or Tar Barling. Allendale is in the North Pennines officially designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty httpwwwntborguk
Additional InformationAbout TransportThe cottage is 10 miles from Hexham Railway station. You can take bus 667 to Allenheads stopping at Catton, the cottage is at the right fork of the B6295.
About GolfingThe Allendale Golf Course is a few miles away.
Slaley International Golf course is half an hour away.
Allendale is laid out on a west facing hillside at High Studdon,
it commands superb views of the Dale of Allen.
With its scattering of remote farm buildings and
the Cheviots which dominate the northern skyline
some 40 miles away, it is designated as an area
of outstanding natural beauty.The nine hole course
has been described by many as "challenging" and
boasts many interesting obstacles. It is certainly
not for the fainthearted but, time and again, visitors
return determined to beat the ditches, gullies, and
wooded fairways that make Allendale so special.
About Scenery/Beauty SpotsThe cottage lies in the dale but you can soon walk or drive onto the moors. There is plenty of Industrial Archaeology and Roman history.
About DrivingThere are some super drives taking in the stupendous countryside. Try driving over Hartside Pass to Penrith over the Pennines.
About WalkingWe provide guide books at the cottage for lots of walks of every kind. You can walk directly from the door, along the river or up to the hills.
About Tourist BoardWe are inspected by the Tourist Board each year and we have been awarded 4 stars.
There is a very helpful Tourist Information centre at Hexham and the Spar shop in Allendale keeps local nformation.
About HistoryThere is a wealth of Industrial Archaeology around in the valley as it was a lead mining area in the 19th century. Half an hour away is the World Heritage site of the Roman Wall.
