House in England, United Kingdom

Property Details of England House

“Cathedral View” is a luxurious mews-style town house situated in a conservation area in a very quiet location in the centre of the historic cathedral city of Wells with parking. It is equipped to the highest specifications and has views to the famous 12th century Gothic cathedral and across the Vale of Avalon to Glastonbury Tor beyond. There is a good selection of inns, restaurants and shops within a five minute walk.

Situated in the heart of Somerset, Wells is the smallest cathedral city in England. It caters for most everyday needs, offering good shopping facilities as well as restaurants and pubs, a cinema, churches of most denominations, together with open-air markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Wells is a popular film location. The most recent productions filmed here are Hot Fuzz (starring Simon Pegg) and The Golden Age (starring Cate Blanchett). One of our guests remarked after watching the DVD of Hot Fuzz when staying at the house, "it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "holiday footage!"

Wells is an ideal base for touring the West Country, with Wookey Hole Caves, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Regency Bath, Bristol and the seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare all in close proximity. For those who like to get some exercise there is excellent walking in the nearby Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the West Mendip Way starts just half a mile from St Thomas Mews) with cycling and bird watching on the Somerset Levels. Sporting facilities in the area include racing at Wincanton and Bath, golf at Wells and near Oakhill, sailing or fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes. In addition, there is a Leisure Centre in Wells offering a variety of recreational facilities.

Local Area Details

Local Area - Wells, Mendips, Cheddar, & Glastonbury
WELLS
Although the smallest city in England, the atmosphere is more like that of small country market town. The cathedral is one of the architectural highlights of Britain, replete with magnificent Gothic carvings, a unique scissors vault to brace the building against shifting medieval foundations, and a marvellous chapter house. It also houses a wonderful clock, with mechanical knights who exchange blows every hour. Adjoining the Cathedral is the 13th century moated Bishop’s Palace - seat of the Bishop of Bath & Wells, famous for its swans who ring, twice daily, the bell beside the drawbridge for food. The Medieval Vicar’s Close is an architectural gem. Wednesday and Saturday are market days which are held in the central market place. Sporting facilities in the area include racing at Wincanton and Bath, golf at Wells and near Oakhill, sailing or fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes. In addition there is a Leisure Centre in Wells offering a variety of recreational facilities.

MENDIP HILLS
Savour the outstanding natural beauty of the Mendip Hills, officially classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. An area of huge environmental importance, both above and below the ground. Situated in Somerset, they are primarily limestone with many caves including the famous Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole. Some of the caves show signs of prehistoric habitation. Apart from these caves and hills, the region also includes the marshy lowland of the Somerset Levels and the nearby towns and villages of Glastonbury, Wells, Charterhouse and Frome. There are also ruins of Roman lead mines, and a Roman road.

EBBOR GORGE NATURE RESERVE
Ebbor Gorge Nature Reserve is owned by the National Trust. There is evidence of inhabitation in this lovely wooded valley dating back to Neolithic times (about 3000 BC). Bones, tools, cooking utensils and ornaments have been found in caves throughout the gorge. There is a nature trail through the gorge, which features some outstanding views over the Somerset Levels.

GLASTONBURY
Known as the birthplace of Christianity in England, where it is said that Joseph of Aramethea buried the chalice used at the Last Supper and built the first Christian church in England. It is also said that he thrust his thorn staff into the ground which took root and produced the distinctive winter flowering thorn, the site now of the Abbey ruins. The Museum has a superb model of the medieval abbey in which King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are said to have been buried. Recent local history is recorded in Glastonbury’s Rural Life Museum, with a farmhouse kitchen and displays of Cider making.
MEARE
From 300BC until AD 100, a lake settlement of houses on stilts and brushwood. Few traces survive. Artefacts excavated are displayed in Glastonbury and Taunton Museums. The most notable existing buildings are the 14th Century Manor House which was used as summer retreats for the Abbots of Glastonbury, and the curious Fish House from the same period which was used to store and supply fish to the monastic table.
In the nearby village of Westhay is the Peat Moors Visitors Centre.
WEDMORE: Has a fine selection of buildings, including Victorian private houses in the ancient village. Modern stained glass in the partly 12th Century St Mary’s Church tells the tale of King Alfred who signed the Treaty of AD 878 here, following his defeat of the Danes at the Battle of Ethendune.
B3151 Crosses the north west corner of the Somerset Levels. Inspiring countryside, this former marsh land drained over the centuries is now cut by a maze of drainage ditches (Rhines) through the peaty land. There are many species of Wetland birds breeding here. In the distance a spectacular view of the great limestone escarpment of the Mendip Hills.
CHEDDAR VILLAGE AND GORGE: At the foot of the Gorge is the village of Cheddar, with olde worlde shops, small cafes and restaurants and the entrance to the fascinating Cheddar Caves, where most recent discoveries of human remains makes Cheddar one of the oldest inhabited villages in the country. Cheddar Gorge is an awesome gash in the Mendip Hills, like a mini Grand Canyon with cliffs towering nearly 500 ft. There is a natural reserve at the head of the Gorge with many species of wild flowers, including the Cheddar Pink, found nowhere else in the world.
BURRINGTON COMBE: Cavers and tourists now tread where Stone Age Man made a home. The approach to Burrington is through a limestone gorge. To the left, almost at the foot of the gorge, is the spot where Reverend Augustus Toplady felt inspired to write the hymn ‘Rock of Ages’. A plaque marks the spot beside the cleft in the rock where shelter was sought.
MENDIP LAKES: Chew Magna and the smaller of the two lakes, Blagdon are both reservoirs created in the early 50’s but have matured to create a natural lakeland environment. A beautiful haven for plant and wildlife. The fishing is some of the finest in the country. Near to the Dam there is a lakeside visitor’s area, with cafe/restaurant/picnic facilities and visitors centre.
WOOKEY HOLE: Visit the old Paper Mill and wonderful Wookey Hole Caves, home of the famous witch, with fascinating underground lakes restaurant facilities.
CHAPEL ALLERTON: Restored Windmill, just west of Wedmore.
WESTHAY PEAT MOORS’ VISITORS CENTRE: An exhibition of archaeology, history and wildlife of the Somerset Levels.
CLARKES VILLAGE STREET: An shopping experience, built on part of the famous old Clarkes Shoe Factory complex.
WOOTTON VINEYARD: Between Wells and Glastonbury. A family run vineyard, producing fine English wine with tasting facilities and a shop.
