Iori Weekly Machiya Nishirokkakucho Japan
House in Kyoto, Japan
Property Details
This recently redone, traditional Kyoto townhouse, has a uniquely elegant atmosphere. It is outfitted with modern furniture and decorated with pan-Asian art. The mushiko-style windows on the second floor, throw patterned light into a living room with two large sofas. The main garden behind the house is slightly larger than most tsuboniwa or bottle gardens, and can be entered from the large tatami room on the first floor. Nishirokkaku-cho has been fully remodeled and accommodates six guests.
A large entrance welcomes guests. On the first floor is a tatami room, with a sitting area at one end and a tastefully decorated alcove at the other end, near the garden. The kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, toaster oven, hot water pot, and sink. At the rear of the house, guests can relax in the cedar wood ofuro bath with shower, while looking out over a small stone garden. Both gardens can be illuminated at night. Guests will find a western-style toilet on this floor as well. Four guests can sleep in high quality futon, laid out on the tatami on the first floor.
Stairs hidden in a closet behind the sitting area lead to the second floor. Here, guests will find the aforementioned living room, with characteristic mushiko windows and couches, perfect for relaxing with a book and coffee or green tea, both of which are provided in the kitchen below. Also on this floor is a tatami room with an alcove display of antique Asian art. Here, high-quality futon bedding can be spread for two guests.
Nishirokkaku-cho is centrally located between Shi-jo and Oike Avenues, west of Karasuma Avenue. The house is a 10 minute walk from the Karasuma-Oike station on the Karasuma and Tozai subway lines. Next to Rokkaku-cho is a kaiseki restaurant called Hyoki, and at the end of the alley between the house and the restaurant is a wine bar. Also nearby is a French restaurant called Gaspard Zin Zin.
Nishirokkaku-cho has been remodeled and is maintained by Iori Co., many of whose staff speak English fluently. Iori staff will help you check in and out, and will clean the house for you during your absence. Iori also offers concierge services. Feel free to ask us about recommendations and arrangements for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and entertainment.
