Property Details of Auvergne House

The house is in Brassac les Mines (http://www.ville-brassaclesmines.fr/), situated in the Mountainous Puy De Dome province of the Auvergne region (highest mountain: Puy de Sancy 6,184 ft). Brassac is about half an hour South of Clermont Ferrand. The house overlooks the River Allier and has three double and one twin bedded room. One of the doubles is on the ground floor and has it's own en-suite shower, with toilet and washbasin (accessible by wheel chair). Two folding beds and a cot are also available. There are two further bath/shower rooms one on the first floor and one on the second floor. Also on the first floor is a large sitting/dining room with satellite TV (BBC & ITV channels) + DVD/CD player. The dining table will seat 10 comfortably . The kitchen, also on the first floor, has a large table + a high chair, as well as a large gas/electric Rangemaster range cooker, dishwasher and family sized fridge/freezer. Off the kitchen is a large terrace, which faces South, good for sunbathing and al-fresco dining. The utility room, on the ground floor, has a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The house is centrally heated with an oil boiler and is very warm even on the coldest of winter days. Temperatures throughout most of the year are generally pleasant however; it has been in the mid 20s when we've been there in February, although snow is not uncommon as late as Easter.

The nearest airport is Clermont Ferrand, but currently the cheapest flights to there are with KLM from Birmingham, changing at Amsterdam. Budget airlines fly to Limoges from East Midlands (Ryanair), about 3hrs drive from Brassac, to Lyon from Stansted (Easyjet), again about a 3 hr drive (or train via Clermont). Thompson also used to go to Lyon from Coventry, but I haven't seen any flights from them since Easter. It's possible to get a train all the way, Eurostar to Paris then there are two direct trains a day to Brassac, or you can change at Clermont; the house is less than ten minutes walk from the station. Alternatively driving takes about 7¼ hours of actual driving time, from the Channel, nearly all on autoroutes (tolls: €44.60). We go on Norfolk Line (http://travel.norfolkline.com/Default.asp) from Dover to Dunkerque prices range from £78 - £118 return in July/Aug if you book now.

Local Area Details

The nearest city is Brioude(http://en.ot-brioude.fr/), a picturesque medieval settlement built up around the beautiful St Juliens Basilica (http://en.ot-brioude.fr/basilica.html). The region is ideal for walking and mountain biking and boasts an exceptional variety of lakes, waterfalls and the river Allier all of which offer excellent fishing, windsurfing and other water sports, including whitewater rafting. There is no pool at the house but swimming is possible and popular in the river at various local spots and there is a municipal pool open in summer. In winter there is both cross country and downhill skiing as well as snowboarding within about 45 minutes drive. There are riding stables in one of the nearby villages.

There are a number of very good restaurants in the area, which is renowned for the wide variety of local cheeses notably St.Nectare, Bleu d'Auvergne and Le Gaperon in the shape of a Puy and very garlicky, to mention just a few. There is also a catering college in the town where you can get an excellent four course lunch for about €15 per head
