Beach apartment for 4 in Idyllic Cotillo Lagoons Canary Islands
Complex as seen from the lagoon
Apartment in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
Property Details of Fuerteventura Apartment
Ground Floor Apartment for 4 in a truly idyllic location with direct access onto a white sandy beach & safe, tidal lagoon.
Our apartment is in a small, friendly but very peaceful complex of just 11, built in a modern interpretation of traditional, whitewashed Canarian architecture. It is well away from any other buildings, situated directly above a safe, sandy beach and sheltered, tidal lagoon, ideal for lazy days soaking up the sun. Being on the ground floor, our guests have direct access from the sunny private terrace, through the sub-tropical communal garden with its dragon trees, bougainvillea, oleander and hibiscus, and down just three steps onto the white sands of a small bay edged by black lava reefs and with crystal-clear, warm water.
Inside the apartment there are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen size bed and one with two extra-long singles. Both are decorated in a modern style with pine furniture and have ample storage space in the fitted wardrobes. A cot (and high chair) can be arranged for a baby on request at a small additional charge. There is a pleasant, newly refurbished shower room with a white suite and thermostatically controlled shower and a recently-fitted and fully-equipped kitchen with gas hob, fridge, microwave, coffee machine, toaster etc. From the large and very bright living/dining room, where you will find a comfy sofa and armchairs, TV, DVD player, CD player and radio, French windows open onto the terrace which has a table and 4 chairs together with 2 sun loungers and a sun brolly. Bed linen is changed weekly; towels twice a week.
The complex stands on its own about 1 km from the village of El Cotillo (2 minutes in your hire car or a 20 - 25 minutes walk along the beach).
Our apartment should appeal to those who dislike crowds and big holiday resorts, who don’t insist on all the latest gadgets, but are happy to live quite simply for a week or two right by the sea. A treat for families with younger kids, older couples in search of a get-away from-it-all location, sun-worshippers, bird-watchers and walkers.
Local Area DetailsEl Cotillo remains a traditional fishing village with tourist facilities rather than an overgrown resort. There are about a dozen restaurants, mostly Canarian with a couple of Italian places (including what are supposed to be, according to the guide books, Fuerte's best Italian restaurant and best beach bar). The majority of restaurants have terraces overlooking the sea and very fresh, locally-caught fish is obviously the big draw on most menus. There are several bars, both Canarian tapas places and a couple of (very quiet!) ex-pat 'pubs', 2 small supermarkets, a good bakery/patisserie (currently in French ownership), a couple of banks/ATMs and a chemist, as well as several general/souvenir places. Internet access is available in the village. In other words, most of your everyday needs can be catered for locally. The nearest petrol station is, however, about 15 minutes drive away at La Oliva, and the next nearest in Corralejo. Petrol prices in the Canaries are much lower than in the rest of Europe, so don’t get caught out – fill up when you’re passing. Regular bus services also link El Cotillo with both Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario but, given the secluded location of the apartment, a hire car is really recommended and, with prices starting from as little as £50 a week for some Group A models, this isn't going to break the bank!
El Cotillo has some of the best beaches in the Canaries, including a vast stretch of sand on the so-called 'Big Wave Beach' to the south of the village and a whole series of beautiful, small, sheltered coves with brilliant white sand and clear turquoise sea to the north around El Caleton. These are divided from each other and protected from the waves of the open sea by lava stone reefs and thus provide safe bathing, even for little ones. Naturism is popular along this stretch of coast.
Cotillo has fast road connections to the island network, making a shopping trip to the capital (40 minutes) or an evening in Corralejo (20 minutes) popular excursions. The central mountains, with historic villages such as Antigua, Betancuria, Pajara or Tefia, with their museums and craft centres, are all under an hour by car. Likewise Caleta de Fuste and its golf course. Other possible excursions include a trip to the island of Lobos from Corralejo, or take the ferry over to Lanzarote for the day (hourly departures also from Corralejo.)
Recreational activities available nearby include walking (we are directly on the much-recommended north coast Corralejo-Cotillo walk), cycling (hire in El Cotillo), fishing, surfing, windsurfing (nearby Lajares with its surf shops and surf schools is Fuerte's 'surfing capital'), diving (dive cente in Corralejo) and of course, swimming and snorkeling straight from the door. There is a collection of basic snorkeling equipment (flippers, masks etc) to hand in the apartment should you fancy giving it a try in the lagoon!
In general, Fuerte will appeal above all to those who love beaches – the island's are the best in the Canaries and some of them truly world-class. So if you’re a sun-worshipper or a beachcomber, a keen windsurfer or snorkeller, this is the place for you. Everyone talks about the wind, and yes, it can be breezy here, but the key thing is the sun. Fuerte has longer sunshine hours on average than Tenerife or Gran Canaria and only a fraction of their average rainfall. Those in search of peace and quiet, something which can be hard to find on the more developed westerly Canary Islands, will also love Fuerte. It’s a big place (nearly the size of Tenerife) but with a small population. The roads are well-built but very quiet, making hiring a car a pleasure, and you can really escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, be it on a deserted white beach or in the stark, striking mountains of the interior, which have a beauty all of their own.
