Cottage in Andalucia, Spain

Property Details

Self catering accommodation in a beautiful rural location on the edge of El Torcal National Park near Villanueva de la Concepcion. (Antequera 18km, Malaga 36km)

Set in 6 acres in a magnificent valley inland between Malaga and Antequera, Casa Puesta del Sol is a conversion forming part of the main house but is completely self-contained.

The rooms are decorated to a high standard in typical Andalucian style with white walls and ceramic tiles throughout. shuttered windows are designed to keep the rooms cool in summer.

The accommodation comprises of a spacious open plan kitchen and living area, separate shower room and a large bedroom with double bed and views over to the El Torcal National Park.

The kitchen is fully equipped with gas cooker, fridge, microwave and a washing machine. This opens onto a large lounge, ideal for relaxing in after a long day in the sun and is furnished with sofa, dining table and Satellite Freeview television. The shower room is fitted with a shaver point. Emergency lighting and smoke detectors are also fitted.

Although the property has only one double bedroom, further sleeping facilities can be arranged to allow up to four people to stay in the accommodation. However, due to the rugged nature of the terrain and the fact that we are a working finca, we feel it is unsuitable for families with very young children.

Outside the property there is a seating area with barbecue, ideal for enjoying the long summer evenings and the spectacular sunsets.

There is a 3.5m diameter splash pool for you to enjoy a cooling dip in the heat of the day.

Please visit our site for more information www.ruralfinca.net or telephone Sue on 0034 952 111734.

Local Area Details

Our area is ideally placed to provide a varied and interesting break away from home. Whether you prefer an active holiday or simply relaxing, there is plenty to do within a relatively short distance.

Walking
This area is wonderful for general walking and hill walking and the scenery is magnificent. The El Torcal national park is but 15 minutes away by car and once on the peak you can take one of the three graded walks or simply pick a spot on the map and go where you like. The El Torcal mountain is a wild and craggy limestone plateau with superb views South to the sea, West towards Ronda and East to the Sierra Nevada mountains. You may be lucky to see wildlife such as Golden Eagles, Griffon Vultures, Hoopoe and Ibex. Orchids, Iris and other wild flowers can also be seen growing in spring.

Painting
Landscape and still life painting here can be a joy. Not only because of the peacefulness but you can virtually guarantee the weather between May and October! Inspiration, if not style can be gained from being close to Malaga, where Pablo Picasso lived.

Bird watching
We are lucky to be able to offer a superb variety of birdlife. From Golden Eagles and Vultures to Hoopoe and Bee-Eaters. Little Owls are around in abundance and can be seen easily by day. Also, the famous pink flamingo lagoon of Fuente de Piedra is only 1 hour from us.

Climbing
The most widely known area for climbing is the Chorro gorge. About 1 hour away by car is the favoured destination for climbers from all over Europe, particularly in the winter months. However, our own El Torcal limestone plateau with its pinnacles and towers also offers something different. The air is cooler than Chorro and therefore not suitable for cold, overcast days.

Skiing
Come between November and March and you should be lucky to get some time on the slopes! A ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada is about 1.5 hours away, and offers really good skiing for both the beginner and more experienced

Golf
Our nearest course is just outside Antequera (40 mins). Although fairly new, the course is a good mixture of easier and more difficult holes. Expect to pay about 30 Euros for a round. About 1 hours drive gives you the opportunity to try some of the numerous courses on the Costa del Sol west of Malaga. However, these tend to be more expensive.

Sightseeing
Antequera (40 mins)

Only 40 minutes drive way is an historic Roman town which boasts good shopping and has a wonderful market where fresh meat, fish and vegetables can be bought. There are many places where you can sample tapas, or simply have a drink in the sunshine while watching the hustle and bustle. You may be lucky to come during Fiesta time, a day and night of celebration, eating, drinking, music and Flamenco dancing.
Influenced by the English community in the area, there are now Chinese restaurants and even a really good Indian curry house! The bullring in Antequera is worth a visit even if you don’t agree with the “sport” of bull fighting, as are the many historic monuments, including San Sebastian church and the Moorish castle which looks over the town. Prehistoric burial sites which date back some 5000 years or "dolmens" are just outside the town.

Lobo Park (40 mins)

A large wolf park where you can see European wolves, Timber wolves and the rare white Alaskan Tundra wolves (polar wolves). The 40-hectare protected and untouched nature park has innumerable rare plant and animal species. Andalucian horses are available for you to ride in this wonderful landscape. Playing possibilities and donkey rides are available for children.

Fuente de Piedra (1 hour)

The lagoon of Fuente de Piedra is considered to be one of the largest natural lakes in Spain. Measuring more than six kilometres long and nearly three kilometres wide, the lagoon provides a breeding ground for pink flamingos in the spring.

Granada and the Alhambra (1.5 hours)

A magnificant city, steeped in history is well worth a visit. The main attraction of course is the Alhambra Palace, so called because of its reddish walls (in Arabic, ("qa'lat al-Hamra'" means Red Castle). It is located to the west of the city of Granada.

Malaga (45 mins)

Málaga is the major coastal city of Andalucia.
Worth a visit are the archaelogical museum on the site of La Alcazaba fortress and the nearby Moorish castle which is now a state hotel (Parador).

The impressive park on Calle Alameda contains one of the most celebrated botanical collections in Europe. In the centre of the city is the beautiful Alameda Gardens.
Pablo Picasso is the city's famous painter and there are quite a few galleries which show his work, including the 16th century Museum of Fine Arts, next to the Cathedral. His birthplace in Plaza Merced is open to the public (free entrance!)

As well as being a cultural centre, Malaga is also a great place to eat out. The Malaga people love their food and eating out is a great way to socialise. Try Tapas, small portions of lots of different dishes which is a good way of trying local dishes inexpensively.

Sevilla (2 hours)

Sevilla is one of the largest historical centres in Europe. Lying on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, it has the minaret of La Giralda, the cathedral, and the Alcázar Palace. Features include Casa de Pilatos, the Town Hall, Archive of the Indies (historical records of America) and the Fine Arts Museum.

Visit the gardens of Maria Luisa Park, where you can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and spend some time just walking around the whitewashed maze of the Barrio de Santa Cruz.

Cordoba (2 hours)

Cordoba gives you a history from both Arab and Roman occupations. The eighth century "Mezquita" or Great Mosque was in its day considered the eighth wonder of the world.

The beautiful gardens of the Alcazar which give out the scent of orange blossom and the district of Juderia with its flower-filled patios are worthy of a visit.

The coast (50 mins) and Gibraltar (2 hours)

For a change, drive down to the Costa del Sol, lie on one of its many beaches and take the occasional dip in the Med. As you drive west, many familiar places will appear, Torremolinos, Benelmadena, Marbella and San Pedro with its collection of sea cruisers that most people could only dream of owning!

If you want a little bit of home then your ultimate destination could be Gibraltar. Shop at Morrisons and M&S and visit the famous rock and say hello to the Barbary Apes! Don´t forget your duty free at the end!
