Apartment in Liguria, Italy
Property Details of Liguria Apartment
Located at the entrance to Triora, a medieval village located 800 metres above sea level in the Maritime Alps; this is a south facing apartment available for rent on the second floor of an old house located on Via San Agostino. Fully renovated in 2006, this 750 sq ft (70 sq meters) apartment sleeps three persons and provides a wonderful get-away to those wishing to experience a slice of Italian mountain village life, featuring breathtaking unobstructed views out over the Argentine Valley and distant mountains.
In 2004, Triora was listed as one of Italy's most beautiful villages (Club dei Borghi Pui Belli d'Italia) of which there are only 100 members. Triora is perfectly placed for those who enjoy walking, hiking, rock-climbing or biking (not to mention eating!) with several paths originating in the village itself. The apartment sleeps three and is literally a one-minute walk to the village grocer, to Tuvi - one of the village's centrally located cafés, and Osteria del Borgo Antico - the village pizzeria/trattoria. Triora is located 40 minutes by car from the seaside resort of Arma di Taggia, which is located on the Riviera dei Fiori (Riviera of Flowers.) A further 15 minutes drive along the highway (A8) to the west will put you in Monaco on the Cote d'Azur.
Apartment Details:
The apartment itself is comprised of four rooms: one large open plan bedroom/living room, one dining room, one kitchen, and one bathroom. There is also a dedicated laundry room for your sole use (no additional cost) located directly next to the apartment with an entrance off the shared entrance hallway for the building. See below for more detail on each room.
Bedroom:
This apartment is unique in that the entrance to the apartment leads into a large open-plan space. In this space there is a double bed, single bed, antique dresser, armoire, and various tables and chairs. This large space with high 10' ceilings can act as your bedroom and living room with plenty of space for your belongings during your stay. Although the flat is fully renovated, the original tile floors were retained in this room thus maintaining an old-Italian feel. Two large windows look south out over the valley with spectacular unobstructed views. A baby cot is also available free of charge.
Dining Room:
This room is located between the main room and kitchen. There is a dining room table and chairs as well as a wood pellet stove. Beautiful views can be seen out over the valley from this room. The original tile flooring along with the high vaulted ceilings were also retained in this room, which feels very welcoming and comfortable.
Bathroom:
Located off of the bedroom, the bathroom comprises a large bathtub, walk-in shower as well as sink, toilet, and bidet. This room is larger than typical and also has high vaulted ceilings in keeping with the interior architectural design of the village.
Kitchen:
Located just two steps up from the dining room, the furnished kitchen comprises a refrigerator, gas cooker/range, electric kettle, chopping block, shelving and plenty of room. Dishes, utensils and pots and pans are provided. The window allows plenty of light and the 12 foot high vaulted ceilings give this room a light and airy feel.
Laundry Room:
The laundry room consists of a washing machine (no dryer.) There are two drying racks in the apartment itself and one finds that things tend to dry quickly when hung.
Changeover Day:
Changeover days are flexible so as to accommodate travel schedules though unfortunately, no rental periods of less than one week are available. Arrivals after 4pm and departures before 10am are appreciated though there is some flexibility. Local shops are open on Sundays though each shop is usually closed for one business day during the week.
Towels/ linen/maid service:
An ample supply of towels and other linens are supplied. There is no daily maid service though cleaning will be carried out after the end of your stay (see other reference.)
Other:
The apartment runs on mains electric and gas for the cooker/range. There is an electric boiler that provides hot water for bathtub, shower and other taps. Both gas and electric is included in the rental price. A wood-pellet stove situated in the dining room provides the heat for the entire flat and there will be a pellet replacement charge per bag used (typically around 7 euros per bag.) There is neither a telephone line nor TV. A small stereo with CD player is onsite as well as vacuum.

Local Area DetailsCoast/Beach:
The coastal area of Liguria is known as the Italian Riviera. What makes Triora so unique is that one can spend a day at the beach and later retire to the cool elevations where Triora is located. The rise from sea level to Triora is 800 meters around 2400 ft over a distance of only 15 miles. All beaches are sandy with large rocks for sunbathing with other water sports available if desired. While some beaches are privately run there are plenty of free public beaches. There are many beachside restaurants and bars all along the coast.
Golf:
There are two golf courses within easy reach: Circolo Golf degli Ulivi at San Remo - about 45 minutes drive and Garlenda Golf Club located between Alassio and Albenga - about 90 minutes drive away.
Skiing:
There two ski resorts about 90 minutes drive by car. The first, Limone Piemonte combines three different ski areas and although offering skiing for all levels it is well regarded by intermediate skiers. The second is called Monesi which is a smaller resort offering challenging skiing. Monesi is located just over the mountains behind Verdaggia though one will have to take the long way around.
Special interest holidays:
Triora is well known for its mountain walks in all directions. It is commmon to see rare birds, fauna, and mushrooms. In September there is an annual Mushroom Festival. Triora is also famous for its important place in the history of witchcraft with an excellent museum and other sites throughout the village marking the 15th century witch executions. The village has eight churches and five palaces most of which are presently being restored, all full of historically interesting paintings and other items. Today many artists and sculptors have made Triora their home and local artwork is visible throughout the village. There are also many neighbouring villages with histories of their own to explore. Nice and Genoa are the nearest cities and both are well worth a day out with the historic towns of San Remo and Imperia along the way. Monaco, located to the west, is another option well worth a look. Travel to Nice airport is about a 90 minutes drive from Triora while the Genoa airport is a bit further and will take around two hours. There is a regular train service from both Nice and Genoa to Arma di Taggia and a frequent bus service from Arma di Taggia to Triora. However, to explore and get the best from the area it is recommended that one uses a car. Free public onstreet parking is available near the entrance to the village (and this apartment.)
Distances:
The apartment is located directly at the entrance of the village which, because of its medieval narrow streets, is primarily a pedestrian oriented village. Though given the location of the apartment there is room to pull a car directly in front of the building for convenient loading and unloading. The free parking area is within 50 yards of the building.
Further details:
There are two bars in Triora and one trattoria providing excellent Italian and local cuisine. There is also an excellent hotel restaurant that hosts many special events throughout the year. In addition there are several good restaurants within driving distance. Further north up the valley, Verdeggia boasts a pizzeria with live music on the weekends. Heading down the valley, restaurants in Molini di Triora and Badalucco in particular offer excellent local fare. Triora also has a grocery store fruit and vegetable shop a bakery known for its famous Triora bread. You will also find hairdressers, a hardware and electrical shop, a gourmet delicatessen, and various gift shops. In the next village down the Argentine valley, Molini di Triora, there is a pharmacy, ATM machine, and several other shops. In the surrounding towns and villages you will find daily markets and various festivals throughout the summer.
Booking notes:
Full payment is required prior to arrival. A cash damage deposit is due upon arrival of Euro 150. An additional Euro 50 equivalent to £33 or US$65 for cleaning at the end of the letting period will be deducted from the damage deposit. The property is strictly non-smoking and pets are not allowed.
