The village is served by excellent amenities including three pubs for eating and drinking out a post office and Tea shop. The exceptionally well preserved Roman milecastle of Poltross Burn is in the heart of Gilsland village and the Roman fort of Birdoswald and Roman Army Museum at Greenhead are within walking distance. There is also easy access to a host of other Roman sites including Chesters Housteads and Vindolanda.

Other nearby attractions include the market town of Haltwhistle which has numerous shops and a leisure centre with swimming pool, or maybe visit the historic town of Brampton or Lanercost Priory which was built in AD1166. The Walltown picnic site at Greenhead is within walking distance and an ideal place for a relaxing picnic.

Gilsland is the perfect place from which to tour the northern part of the British mainland. Its central position gives easy access the historic cities of Hexham, Berwick upon Tweed and Newcastle upon Tyne to the east and Carlisle and the Solway Coast to the west.
