Local Area Details

Jewel of Roman Provence as its name indicates, Vaison la Romaine is a must to visit in the Haut Vaucluse. The city, higtily interesting from an archeological point of view, is surrounded by the river Ouveze.
On the right bank are two different quarters: the site of the ancient Roman colony and the modern town. Archeological digs have revealed immense, luxurious, and elaborate Gallo Roman homes. On the left bank on top of a rocky spur is the Haute-Ville, originating in the 13thc. In Medieval times the villagers settled in the heights at the foot of the castle to protect themselves from robbers and invasion. Here, in the sumptuous decor of Mont Ventoux, and the famous mountains Dentelles de Montmirail, one can journey through 20 centuries of the life of Comtat Venaison and Provence! In immediate proximity to Vaison are many provençal villages all with their traditions of famous wines, potters and artisan"s workshops.
Buisson - See the twelfth century.church
Cairanne - See the chapel of Notre Dame de la Vigne.
Séguret - One of the most beautiful villages of France. Renowned for its provençal crèche. Also, one can admire the chapel Sainte Thècle, the Saint Denis church and the Reynier doors of the Huguenots.
Gigondas - This village is known world-wide for its famous wines. It can be admired too for its robust ramparts which shelter sumptuous monuments such as the Hospices de Gigondas or the Roman chapel of Saint-Cosme.
