Cottage in England, United Kingdom
Property Details of England Cottage
Located in the highly acclaimed Peak District village of Hartington, centrally located in the White Peak area of the Peak District, this Picture Postcard Cottage is over 500 yards old, is graded the maximum 5 Stars and sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms with three spacious en-suites.
This cottage was heavily up-graded following purchase by the present owners in 2002. It is three bedroomed, each bedroom having a spacious en-suite and is between 500 & 700 years old. The original cruck beams are exposed! The spacious living room is heavily beamed (although not as old as the cottage itself), and has an Inglenook fireplace with imposing dressed stone surround, mullioned windows and walls well over two feet thick. Without doubt this is a most relaxing room. There is a tevelsion, video and CD player, but who needs these – whether in summer of winter, just sit in the leather settees and soak in your historical surroundings.
The cottage benefits from fully controllable central heating,
The kitchen is top of the range, with gorgeous real granite sinks, gloss worktops, and of course with all necessary appliances, including fridge freezer, dish-washer, washing machine and micro-wave and is adjacent to the open plan beamed dining area.
Some limited outdoor seating area both at the front and the back of the property with flower borders. Most importantly housekeeping is our highest priority. In each cottage there are seven (!) personalised highly organised information folders, much praised, enabling guests to make the most of their stay. Weekly events lists are supplied between May and September.
Local Area DetailsHartington is one of the most highly regarded villages in the Peak, famous for its creamery with shop selling genuine Stilton and other cheeses, geese pond, hall and fine old stone buildings. The approach down a long dale to the village from the main road really takes some beating. The River Dove is only a few hundred yards away and a very popular walk starts in the village, over some lovely meadows to the River, along the stretch known as Berefsford Dale, which in turn leads onto Wolfscote Dale and the most famous Dale of the Peak, Dovedale.
There are numerous footpaths and bridle ways in the immediate vicinity, offering unrivalled walking in the best part of the White Peak. The highly popular Tissington Trail, which runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and is just 1 mile from the cottages. Two further trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail (both of similar distance), are within 2 miles. These three tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet minor roads, which can be accessed at numerous points along the trails. These former railway lines have much else to offer, not least quality views, but also interesting viaducts, steam beam engines and other remnant of the past.
Hartington is located in that part of the Peak District known as the White Peak. This is the area of rolling countryside, dales, streams and rivers, limestone villages and dry-stone walls, which give the area so much character. Hartington’s central position within the White Peak is confirmed by its equal distance, namely 11 miles, from Buxton, Matlock, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek, all towns on the perimeter of the White Peak at different points on the compass.
All the villages in the White Peak are well worth exploring, ideally on foot. Nearly all consist primarily of old stone cottages, with tracks and ginnells to explore. Hartington, one of the most visited villages is famous for its creamery, cheese shop selling genuine Stilton cheese and other types, and geese pond, The estate village of Tissington, 10 minutes away, features on the front page of many publications. There are wonderful ruins such as Peveril Castle. Intact stately homes include Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, (no more than 15 minutes away) Keddlestone Hall and Sudbury; Caves include four at the attractive village of Castleton the only place where the lovely semi-previous stone Blue John is mined, and also one in Buxton. There are numerous rocky outcrops and other caves also in the area to explore and climb. The wonderful old lead mine Magpie Mine is just 10 minutes away. Stone circles and burial mounds abound, there is plenty of evidence of Roman occupation and even the fields remind one of the Medieval period with their 'terraces', ridge and furrow or later, strip fields, always surrounded by the wonderful dry stone walls. There are numerous reminders also of our Industrial past, such as Arkwright's Cromford Mill. The absolutely amazing National Tramway Museum is a must and there is also the surprisingly interesting National Stone Centre. Buxton, 15 minutes away, with its famous Crescent, Pavilion Gardens, Orangery and Opera House is well worth a visit. Carsington Water and Rudyard Lake attract bird lovers and water enthusiasts. Alton Towers is under 30 minutes drive away. All in all, our part of the Peak District, that within 30 minutes, including all the above, has more to offer the visitor than anywhere else in Britain
