Villa in Andalucia, Spain
Property Details of Andalucia Villa
‘Cortijo Amapola’ offers self-catering holiday accommodation in an Andalucian country villa with large swimming pool. Set amongst olive and almond groves in the spectacularly beautiful region of the Axarquia, inland Costa del Sol, with panoramic hillside views of Lake Vinuela and the Mediterranean.
La Amapola is in one of the most beautiful locations in southern Spain. The view from the large hill-top swimming pool is absolutely spectacular, stretching down over olive groves and meadows of wild flowers to the blue lake below and on to the sea.
The house itself is spacious and airy, styled with a Mediterranean feel with whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles and wooden beams in the high ceilings. There are three double bedrooms, sleeping a total of up to six adults and 2 children, with 2 bathrooms, a living room and a large open-plan kitchen and dining room.
Outside is a large verandah with dining terrace and outdoor barbecue for eating alfresco under the grapevines, and a Moorish walled courtyard with flowering climbers, jasmine and bougainvillea.
The 3 acres of grounds are a treasure trove of natural splendour, with virtually no passing traffic, apart from the occasional horse-rider or herd of mountain goats. There are so many wonderful places to relax in the sun or shade, and all kinds of pretty, hidden corners in which to read a book, sip a chilled drink and get away from it all.
Wildflowers, butterflies and birdlife, peaceful and secluded, yet close to local shops and bars, 30 mins from beaches and an hour from Malaga/Granada - your own private paradise!
Local Area DetailsInland Axarquia is one of the most beautiful regions in Spain, with its landscape of gently rolling hills, white hilltop villages, lakes and dramatic mountains sweeping down towards the Mediterranean.
Nestling on the hillside between two tiny mountain hamlets, Cortijo Amapola is totally secluded and private, yet within easy reach of all local amenities. Only half an hour from the beach and an hour from Granada and Malaga, set in peaceful and tranquil surroundings, it makes a great base for sightseeing and is ideal for outdoor pursuits. There are a number of excellent local restaurants nearby, as well as some fabulous seafood restaurants on the coast half an hour away. Above the house is a pretty little hilltop bar in a beautiful scenic location.
Sightseeing
The region is steeped in culture, history and tradition dating back to Roman and Moorish times and beyond. The Moorish influences are still very much apparent, not just in the famous Alhambra Palace, but in the steep winding streets of the white hilltop villages. Recommended day trips include Malaga's Picasso museum and the wonderful tapas bars in the centro historico, the fabulous Moorish architecture of Cordoba, the hot springs at Alhama de Granada, the lake at Beremejales and the gorgeous scenery at El Torcal and Chorro Gorge. Seville and Ronda are also accessible for a pleasant day trip or a relaxing night away.
Outdoor Pursuits
The area offers excellent walking country and abundant wildlife, as well as a host of attractive mountain villages that make easygoing stop offs; the perfect base for a range of leisure activities including horse-riding, birdwatching, hiking, and mountain biking. We can provide links to arrange excursions if you are interested in any of these activities. There are local golf courses within half an hours drive on the coast, and skiing is available during the winter months at Granada’s Sierra Nevada, an hour and a half away.
Beaches
Only half an hour's drive to the nearest beaches, with beachside promenades, ice-cream parlours and cafes, as well as some wonderful seafood restaurants. The nearest beach is Torre del Mar at 25kms. Nerja, a further 15kms, is a very pretty and pleasant resort with cliffside beaches and little sandy coves and beachside walks, plus interesting shops, inviting bars and restaurants, and a variety of water sports from sailing to scuba diving.
Shopping
Malaga and Granada both offer some fabulous shopping opportunities, with wonderful food markets and little shops selling everything from Moroccan ceramics and vibrantly coloured striped silk scarves to handmade leather goods. Closer by in Torre del Mar the weekly street market sells traditional Andalucian ceramics, clothing, lace and a variety of delicious local produce. For brand name clothing, shoes etc the local hypermarket has hundreds of shops including Zara, Mango and Massimo Dutti, as well as a large supermarket, and Periana village has a selection of small shops to meet all your daily needs.
Fiestas
Andalucia is famous for its lively nightlife and colourful fiestas; carnival in February, Semana Santa in March/April and in Periana the annual peach fiesta, the olive oil fiesta and the feria of San Isidro during the summer months. Neighbouring Alcaucin holds a small but prestigious flamenco festival in August.
