Local Area DetailsThe Inishowen Peninsula is situated in the North West of the Republic of Ireland and it possesses such a range of sights and attractions that is often referred to as Ireland in Miniature This is the undiscovered Ireland a world apart a timeless place. It is the most northerly part of Ireland.Inishowen is well known as one of the most scenic parts of Ireland but the nature of that scenery combines with the up to date outdoor sporting facilities to provide the ideal base for an activity holiday.
On a clear night you can pick the stars out of the sky.
Spoil yourself with a swim in Lenan Beach, a walk on the cliffs at Dunaff Head or a visit to the waterfall at Glenevin (pictured)where the river tumbles 30 feet over a pitch black rock into a foaming pool. The Gap of Mamore, five miles north of Buncrana passes between Mamore Hill and Urris at 800ft. above sea level. This is a favourite spot for tourist and local alike with its spectacular views of the Inishowen peninsula and beyond to the broad sweep of the Atlantic Ocean. The ruins of Lenan Fort can be seen at the bottom of the Gap.
Enjoy the Clonmany Festival usually held the first week in August.
For those interested in Irish history there is the annual McGlinchey Summer School held in Clonmany over a long weekend in June (www.clonmany.com for more information). The School really draws a crowd to the area.
The Isle of Doagh Visitor Centre is an interesting tour of local history and very close by – only open in the main season and at Christmas.

You can travel further afield to the world-famous Giant’s Causeway, in Northern Ireland which is accessible via the car ferry over the Foyle estuary at Greencastle. It would take about an hour and a half to get there round the lovely coast.
Also further afield there is also fantastic walking country within about an hour’s drive to the west – reputedly the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Slieve League near Glencolumcille. The journey there will take you past the Blue Stack mountains and the village of Killybegs, which is worth a visit.
Not too far away (about 40 minutes) is the slightly spooky Malin Head, the most northerly point in Ireland (and possibly the windiest, too). There are walks up to a look-out tower, and it is fair to say that it has not been ruined by tourism.
You can go on Marine boat trips (either to fish or look for birds/ seals/dolphins, which are prevalent) at Rathmullin, on the other side of the Swilly Estuary. Tel 00 353 74 58131. There is a ferry across the Swilly from Buncrana to Rathmullin. Check sailing times on 00353749381901.
The pretty coastal town of Moville on the other side of the peninsula is worth a visit. There is a good walk along the banks of the beautiful Foyle estuary from Moville to Greencastle, which takes about 45 minutes. There are also lots of places to get a coffee or a meal in Moville.
EATING OUT.
Places to eat and drink are, as you might imagine, many and varied, and it’s worth trying out the craic in a few of your own. Clonmany boasts many bars and just along the Urris road there is a pub called the Rusty Nail (pictured)(2 miles from house) which does good food.
Ballyliffin Golf Club do good meals and you don't have to be a member.
At Simpson's Award Winning bar they cater for all tastes with freshly made-home cooked meals. Reasonably priced they are open 7 days a week 12noon - 10pm (9 pm Sundays) They also have a nightclub Tul na ri, one of the best entertainment venues around. Simpson's Bar

Kealy’s seafood bar at Greencastle (about 20 minutes away) also has an excellent reputation, but is only open in high season. Tel 00 353 74 93 81010 for information and reservations.
There is a good pub, restaurant and live music venue (with surprisingly big names) at McGrory’s of Culdaff (www.mcgrorys.ie). They have traditional live music as well.
Many places have live music but be prepared to wait until 10pm or beyond – the Irish like a late night.
