About Beaches
Maya Beach is just about 2 miles long. From the beach there are some very nice swimming spots. On the South end of Maya Beach a small coral reef can even be reached by wading in from the beach. The water is generally only about 3 feet deep when you wade out 100 feet from the beach. The Maya Beach Hotel area has a nice sandy bottom and very little sea grass.
About Fishing
Fly fishing is popular with visitors to this area. Local guides can take you to saltwater flats, rivers and lagoons for a chance at permit, bonefish and tarpon. If you're not a fly fisherman, try trolling or spin casting for any number of fish, just for the sport or for eating. Barracuda, mackerel, jack, snapper, grouper, even tuna are frequently caught in the area.
About Airport Information
Maya Beach is only 23 miles from Cockscomb, a large nature reserve which is home to many of Belize's wild jaguars as well as pumas, ocelots, and many other wonderful species of Belizean wildlife. Guided tours are available by local tour operators who can pick you up at hotels on the peninsula, including from the Maya Beach area.

About Local Restaurants
Driving from Belize City to the Placencia Peninsula and the Maya Beach area takes you past some incredible scenery. The Hummingbird Highway crosses a dramatic mountain range (not high, but gorgeous nonetheless!) and treats you to curves, hills, one-lane bridges, speed bumps and close-up looks at some of the prettiest communities in the country. Once you turn on to the road to Placencia, expect some bumps, potholes, mud and dust as the road is not yet paved (as of Sept. 2008). But they promise to start soon!
