Property Details of Catalonia House
Our 160 year-old house is in Rasquera, an old Catalan village near the River Ebro, 25 kilometres inland from the unspoilt Costa Daurada. It is 60 kms from Reus airport and two hours drive from Barcelona.
The first and second storeys comprise a lounge, large kitchen/dining-room, a double bedroom, two small single bedrooms and a bathroom.
The ground floor is a self-contained apartment with a kitchen, bed-sitting room with a double sofa-bed, and a bathroom. As the house backs onto neighbouring properties and has windows only to the front, the apartment enjoys limited natural light.
There is an open terrace on the roof, but there are views only of the street.
Although the house has been fully renovated and contains modern amenities, it should be appreciated that this is a restored village house and not a beachside penthouse.
Local Area DetailsRasquera is a typical Catalan farming village, dating back at least 1000 years. The Old quarter, where the house is situated, is a maze of narrow streets, alleys, stone steps and arches. There are a few shops, a bank, a pharmacy, several patisseries ( the local speciality, ) a resturant, a pleasant caf� and four bars. The villagers are friendly and helpful, but do not speak English. Children are particularly welcome in this very safe environment. There are major festivals in Rasquera in early May and early August.
There is a fine new public swimming pool ( open July to early september only.)
The towns of Mora d'Ebre and Mora la Nova ( 15 kms ) provide a full range of shops and restaurants, while the city of Tortosa is 30 kms along the scenic Ebro valley.
The lower region of the Ebro enjoys some of the most varied scenery in the country. The river, in places 200 metres wide, cuts through the mountains, producing spectacular cliffs, such as those at Miravet ( 4kms by ferry,) where a Templar castle overlooks the river.
The Ebro delta ( 35kms ) is one of Europe's leading nature reserves, with an emphasis on bird-watching
The inland sierras provide wonderful scenery and also excellent wine ( notably the fashionable Priorat.)
The coastal towns of the southern Costa Daurada, in particular, L'Ampolla and L'Ametlla del Mar ( both 25kms ) are largely underdeveloped, uncrowded and unspoilt, with local restaurants providing excellent value.
Tortosa boasts a fine cathedral and historic quarter, while Tarragona ( 70 kms )is noted for its historic buildings and Spain's finest Roman remains.
