Active Volcano and a Black Sand Beach United States

House in Hawaii, United States

Property Details of Hawaii House

Lava viewing opportunities are excellent at this time.
For current eruption activity visit:http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update

The beach at Kaimu is a ten-minute walk across the 1990 lava flow and has been
planted with coconuts by the local families. This beach is spectacular
but almost always too rough for swimming. If you turn to the west you
will see steam rising high in the air where the lava flow enters the
ocean about 3 miles away. Walk the coast about 40 minutes and you come
to a second beach where the Hawaiian Monk Seal will sometimes haul out
to rest. On a good day you may also see turtle, dolphin, whale or the
I'o (Hawaiian Hawk). You may want to stop at Verna's restaurant on your
walk back to enjoy some local grinds (great papaya smoothie). A
five-minute drive up the road from Kaimu is Kehena. Here a trail leads
down to a beach that is often calm and where people swim with dolphins.
Nude sunbathing is not legal in Hawaii County. The law is not enforced
here and those who frequent this beach have declared it clothing
optional.
A short drive further is Ahalanui County Park. Here a several acre pool
connects to the ocean. The water here is calm and warm regardless
of ocean conditions. Great for children and sore muscles!
Continuing along the coast road you come to Po'oiki with numerous surf
breaks. Warm ponds (volcano heating) are close by as well as a natural
sauna. In Pahoa there is a county pool open to the public.
Badminton, croquet, bicycles, barbecue and Ping-Pong are provided at
Kaimu. There is a beautiful outdoor rock wall shower where we often cool
off after the beach.

Beds: Upstairs-1 queen, 1 double Downstairs-1 queen, 1 double in 1 room
Groceries: Safeway in Hilo on Highway 11 just past Wal-Mart is a good
place to stop on your way to Kaimu.
Amenities: Washer, dryer, Sat TV, VCR, linens, board games, coffee
maker, microwave, fully equipped kitchen

Weather
Trade winds blow from the northeast to the southwest. All the Hawaiian
Islands are lush and green with more rain on the windward (for the Big
Island, Hilo) side while the leeward (Kona) side is more barren, dry
desert. Still, micro-climates abound. Kaimu sits below the rain shadow
of the volcano's southeast rift zone. Typical weather is sunny with some
early morning and frequent nighttime showers. In 20 years I have only
stayed at Kaimu one time where rain limited outdoor activity. If a large
weather system moves in, the entire island can be drenched for days. If
you get 'Kona weather', where the winds blow from the southwest, the
weather pattern reverses and Kona rains while Hilo shines. However, the
volcano is the biggest weather factor. Trades push the "vog" (smoke,
haze, fumes) to the Kona side. This usually gives Kona beautiful sunsets
and poor visibility. Individuals with respiratory problems (asthma,
emphysema, allergies) may find conditions on the Kona side compound
breathing difficulties. Kaimu has some of the cleanest air on the
planet, traveling over 2000 miles of open ocean before reaching us.

Local Area Details

Directions: When you pick up the rental car you will be asked where you
are staying. Say, "965-0249", the phone # at Kaimu. When you leave the
airport make a Left at the first traffic light (Highway 11, also called
Kanoelehua Ave). You may want to shop at Wal-Mart (Left on Makaala) or
Safeway (Left on Puainako). With your shopping complete get back on
Highway 11 and continue approximately 3 miles to the light where you
make a Left following the signs that say "Pahoa" or "Kalapana". You are
now on Highway 130 which you follow past or through the town of Pahoa
(your choice-the town is scenic and you can get videos, meals or 7-11
items). Continue on 130, following the signs that say Kalapana OR
Kaimu. Make a Left off 130 at the Kalapana exit. This brings you to
Highway 137. Make a Right. #1 Kaimu Bay is the first house on the
right, red, 2 story. If the chain is across the driveway, park and walk
next door. Our neighbors, Kimo and/or Titi, will come over, open the house and show
you around. You may want to print the map at:
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=5&n=2142439&e=293014&size=m

NOT E: By the steps down to the outside shower are two Hawaiian chili
pepper bushes. These are great for salsa, but be sure children do not
eat these or even touch them and then rub their eyes. Very hot!

Dear Alan,
Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed staying at your house at
Kaimu, July 11 & 12. We were fascinated by the lava flows. It's hard
to believe that what was once a beautiful bay is now that very large
lava flow. We did all the National Park stuff and went to South Point.
We enjoyed visiting with Tootsie and her family. Her sharing of
experiences and stories made the visit a lot more special. She was so
gracious and generous, bringing us pineapple, papaya and flowers. My
grandsons got to know her grandchildren and saw their garden, and farm.
We went out onto the jeep road toward Royal Gardens on the evening of
July 11 when the volcano was really sending a lot of lava down the
mountain. It was impressive watching the flow. I haven't yet seen my
son's video footage but it will be interesting. We later learned that
it reached the ocean later that night and we saw the steam from Kaimu
beach the next morning just before we left. Thanks again for sharing
your house.

Dear Alan,
We absolutely loved Kaimu, your house, and Puna in general. What
an incredible place. We bought a copy of Aloha Kalapana ⬠the
photographs and the story of the loss of the town were so powerful. And
we thought living in earthquake country was a risk. Your house was just
perfect for us, and we're already saving for our next trip, hopefully
for a few weeks. How far in advance do we need to book for a stay next
winter, say January or February? We're also thinking of visiting Maui
as well, so if you know of any reasonably priced home rentals there (we
realize Maui is going to be more expensive than Kaimu) please let us
know. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise.
All the best,
Carol and Herman

Dear Alan:
Concerning our stay at your house: we had a very good time and liked it
a lot; we, and especially Max, enjoyed the neighbors and their
activities; they (i.e., 8 adults) cooked the desert for the 1st birthday
party (small:only 400 guests!) for some friend of a friend --took them 2
days, and lots of action, about 200 coconuts were opened.....Kimo and
his wife are very nice and friendly and let Max participate in the
cooking and earth pit oven preparation, animal feeding, etc. We also
saw lava spraying out of Pu'u O'o right from the beach in front of the
house; We also spent some very nice time (snorkeling!) at your friend's
house, who was nice enough to invite us over and even fed us lunch. We
have to write Bill a note and thank him once more for his hospitality.
Max had a blast swimming in his natural pool; he would like to have a
swimming pool with humuhumunukunukua'opua'as (sp?) in St. Louis now (we
had fun discussing the "realization" of such a backyard project). The
outside shower is really nice and we all used it a lot; I don't think we
ever showered inside! So, we had a very good time during our whole
vacation, and in your house specifically; we definitely would like to
come back to Kaimu at some point.
Greetings, Brigitte

Dear Alan,
It is truly a pleasure to have met you, and to be staying in your Kaimu
house! It is a delight. We have marveled for two days at the underwater
lava emission and the plume of steam it causes. Today we drove to
Volcano and enjoyed the view of the Puu O'o vent from the Hirano store
parking lot. Then tonight it must be erupting, because we see a huge
glow in the sky above the Peleiholani's house. We walked out on the lava
and got a clear view and couldn't see lava flow, but could clearly see
the steam and gas clouds rising and changing rapidly just above the
volcano. We could also see some lava reflection in the steam rising
over the ocean tubes. It has been just great!
We appreciated seeing the photo books of the volcano activity. And also
using the VCR to review our own camcorder videos, and to view a volcano
tape we purchased which shows the Puu O'o activity up through June, 1997.
We bathed in a natural heated pool at Isaac Hale Beach Park which was
wonderful. We also found many additional tips and good, current
information in "Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed", a guide book which
came out last year.
Our visit to Mauna Kea was great. We also got to visit the remote
control rooms for the Keck Telescopes in Waimea. Do you know they can
control those two huge telescopes from 25 miles away? The astronomers
rarely go up the mountain any more.
Thank you for showing us the Monk Seal work tape. It was very
impressive.
