At Le Cariol, away from the humdrum of everyday life, you can unwind in an environment where everything is geared towards relaxation and enjoyment. You can relax because of the peace and quiet, laze around the pool in the pool house, relax in the sauna or enjoy a nice glass of wine from our wine cellar on our terrace or by the fireplace in the foyer… But you can also relax and enjoy your encounters with art, culture, nice (local) cuisine – either prepared in our own kitchen or somewhere else – and discovering the Périgord Pourpre, a little south of Bergerac. We also organize theme weeks in the field of ceramics, painting, yoga and cuisine.

Local Area Details

The Perigord is the old name for the Dordogne region. The Perigord consists of 4 parts:

The northern part is Perigord Vert that is where the forests are beautifully green. In the centre toward the west lies Perigord Blanc named after the white chalk plateaux. This is an unusual archaeological area. In the southeast there is Perigord Noir home to many black truffles and finally in the south there is the Perigord Pourpre called after the extensive vineyards.

Le Cariol lies in the Perigord Pourpre in the vicinity of the Bergerac and Monbazillac wine regions. Various medieval fortified towns are situated in the surroundings such as Monpazier Issigeac and Beaumont du Perigord. The region is renowned for its gastronomy in which duck truffle walnuts and foie gras are central ingredients.

The district has a land climate but is also influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a mild climate where it can become nice and hot in the summer but occasionally very cold in the winter. The air belongs to the cleanest in Europe. In the evenings if the weather is clear, the Milky Way and thousands of other stars are clearly visible.

The Perigord is also referred to as the Land of the 1001 Castles. In addition to the many castles the region is also known for the many caves where remnants from prehistoric times have been discovered.
